New Online Magazine about Student Life at HSE

Students from the Faculty of Social Sciences and international Master’s students at HSE Moscow are launching Read Square — a new online magazine in English. Read Square will be updated every three weeks and will offer international insight and opinion on Higher School of Economics news, science and future perspectives in a global world.

The magazine will publish interviews, articles, reviews and blogs on local and international topics. Editor-in-Chief Yulia Kazakova explains that the basic concept is to examine one word or one phenomenon from an HSE point of view in each issue. Read Square will explore new opportunities with foreign guests. They want international students to be so up-to-the-minute with what’s on at HSE’s social scene that Russian students will be asking their advice about where to go. To get started, Yulia invited fellow students to give interviews about their experiences at HSE and some of the most gregarious and engaged students came forward and formed the editorial team. Many of them are graduating in September so there are opportunities for new students to contribute and get involved. The magazine’s team would particularly welcome the help of native English speakers with editing and proof-reading the texts.

The first edition of Read Square is dedicated to the word Democracy. There will be articles about debating stereotypes and women’s interest in politics, about whether Kurds should wait for Democracy in the Middle East and about online learning as an opportunity for students in undemocratic countries. International students enthuse about studying in Russia and discovering that stereotypes of Russian behaviour are misleading. The next issue will be dedicated to Fashion.

The current editorial team includes Alexandre Nachef, an exchange student from France, Joshua Levy, full-degree student on Master’s programme Governance of Science, Techology and Innovation, and several Russian students of HSE’ Faculty of Social Sciences. There are also students from MGIMO, Bauman Institute and Finacial Academy on the team who are responsible for the debating section. Students from HSE's School of Business Informatics have developed the technological platform for the magazine.

The magazine is launched April 14. Make sure to visit the site to see for yourself. If you wish to contribute to the magazine, start a column or suggest a topic, contact its editor Yulia Kazakova at info@readsquare.ru or ylvkazakova@gmail.com
