Students of the Faculty of Computer Science Take Internship at Google

A lot of IT companies, both in Russia and throughout the world, organize internships for students. This year students from the Faculty of Computer Science have taken internships at Facebook in the USA and at Google in Europe. Mikhail Dubov, first-year student of the master’s programme in Data Science told us about his internship at Google.

Each year Google recruits bachelor’s and master’s students for the position of software engineering interns or site reliability engineering interns. A typical internship at the company lasts 3 months over the  summer.

If you would like to become a Google intern, you need to take part in two 45-minute interviews via Google Hangouts and show your knowledge of basic algorithms and coding. Then you have a host matching interview with your supervisor (or host) that will help to determine if the intern’s background matches the project. Mikhail Dubov worked on a project dedicated to the library of machine learning algorithms.

Most of the internships are organised either in the U.S. or in Europe. Mikhail Dubov works in Europe, since the project that best matched his experience was based in London, where three large Google offices are located. Mikhail works in an office on Buckingham Palace Road, just a mile from Buckingham Palace.

The project he works on focuses on the internal forecasting platform, based on time series analysis, which is currently used by Google to predict the sales of different devices (Nexus, NestCam, etc.). Trying to expand the scope of application of this platform, the team decided to add support for machine learning algorithms in order to be able to predict sales based on patterns that incorporate a variety of product-related data (not just previous sales). Mikhail’s current task is to design and integrate a Google machine learning library in the platform. He has also developed a client application that allows you to experiment with different patterns of the platform.

During Google internships special events, such as the Intern Summit held in Zurich in July, tech and talks for interns are organised. This year one of the talks was delivered by Jon Skeet, software engineer at Google with the highest rating on StackOverflow.com.

Google also offers a lot of resources for employee education, for example Google interns can take machine learning courses. According to Mikhail, Google cares for the interns and pays well for the work. Some very successful developments started as intern projects.
