HSE Students Take 3rd Place at International Mathematics Competition for University Students

The International Mathematics Competition for University Students was held in Bulgaria from June 28th to August 3rd, 2019. 360 students from 77 teams from all over the world took part in one of the most prestigious student competitions in mathematics. Teams from the Faculty of Computer Science and the Faculty of Mathematics represented HSE University at the event. These teams were led by Andrey Gavrilyuk, Expert from the Centre of Student Competitions, who has been preparing HSE students for mathematical competitions for the last 5 years. The trip was funded by the HSE Endowment Fund.

IMC participants competed in team and individual contests. Dmitry Rybin, 3rd-year student of the programme in ‘Mathematics’, achieved great results in the individual contest, making it to the top 5 best participants of the competition and receiving the Grand Prix. Three more students received gold medals: Ivan Safonov (2nd-year student of the programme in Applied Mathematics and Information Science), Egor Ryabov (2nd-year student of the programme in Mathematics), and Rodion Zaitsev (3rd-year student of the programme in Mathematics). Karim Shamazov (2nd-year student of the programme in Applied Mathematics and Information Science) won silver, and Maxim Urmanov (3rd-year student of the programme in Applied Mathematics and Information Science) took bronze.

This successful performance of HSE students helped HSE University in Moscow to succeed in the team competition. The HSE team took 3rd place, which was the best result among all the Russian teams and very close to the silver medalists – the team from the University of Bonn. This is the best result in the history of HSE University in Moscow's participation in the International Mathematics Competition for University Students.

The team from HSE University in St. Petersburg also achieved some great results: Vladislav Epifanov won a gold medal, while Andrey Nefedov, Vasily Alferov and Vladislav Moskin were all awarded silver.

The results of the competition have been published on the IMC official website.
