HSE University Life

The 29^th Vojtěch Jarník International Mathematical Competition has taken place in Ostrava, Czech Republic with HSE being represented by a team of six students from the Faculty of Computer Science and the Faculty of Mathematics.

Mauro Mariani, a mathematician from Italy who is currently an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Mathematics at HSE, studies probability theory and statistical mechanics. Prior to joining HSE in 2017, he held faculty positions in France and Italy after obtaining his PhD from the Sapienza University of Rome.

Christopher Brav, Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Mathematics, joined the Higher School of Economics in 2014 after holding several teaching and research positions abroad. The HSE news service recently had the opportunity to speak with him about his research interests, teaching philosophy and how he has settled into life in Moscow.

On December 14-16, 2016, the members of the Mathematics Faculty’s International Advisory Board visited the faculty and met with students, faculty, and staff.

On November 1st, the list of 2017 Class AMS Fellows has been made public. According to the mission of the program, 'the Fellows of the American Mathematical Society programme recognizes members who have made outstanding contributions to the creation, exposition, advancement, communication, and utilization of mathematics.'

In September 2014, new international professors and postdocs joined the Faculty of Mathematics. January issue of 'The HSE LooK' welcomes aboard Assistant Professor Satoshi Kondo.

Professor Vereshchagin has been elected to the Informatics section of the Academy of Europe. The Academia Europaea is a functioning European Academy of Humanities, Letters and Sciences, composed of individual members. Membership is by invitation.

In February-March 2014, the HSE launched six new international laboratories following a tender of three-year projects under the supervision of leading international researchers. One of the projects is the Laboratory of Stochastic Analysis and its Applications. The HSE News Service keeps on interviewing new staff members of the laboratory. This time Alexander Veretennikov, Leading Research Fellow at the Laboratory of Stochastic Analysis and its Applications, agreed to tell us about his work and plans at the HSE as well as about his hobbies.
