In its 31st issue The HSE Look is focused on how HSE makes its education model more flexible in response to global transformations, and two Academic Supervisors of English-taught programmes (Dirk Meissner and Christian Fröhlich) share their experience in the interviews.  The HSE Look also presents a new series of public events for discussions on philosophy, and the upcoming visits of guest scholars and lecturers to different HSE departments, as well as the open call for funding their visits.

On March 4, from 12 p.m to 5 p.m. HSE students will gather at the Orion slope, at the Kant ski resort (metro Nagornaya), for friendly snowboarding and skiing competitions. This is one of the events organized to celebrate the 25^th anniversary of HSE’s founding. Visitors will have the chance to try the best slope in the sports resort free of charge – and can either bring their own skiing or snowboarding equipment or rent it on site.

HSE and Chung-Ang University (Republic of Korea) have signed an agreement on student exchange. As part of of the agreement, three students from the HSE School of Logistics will study in Seoul per semester.

The registration of student organizations started on February 15, 2017. Registered organizations will receive a ‘guaranteed basic budget’ as well as other forms of support, such as the provision of premises, transport services, and information support. Christopher Brav, Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Mathematics, joined the Higher School of Economics in 2014 after holding several teaching and research positions abroad. The HSE news service recently had the opportunity to speak with him about his research interests, teaching philosophy and how he has settled into life in Moscow.

A great number of student associations and clubs at HSE involve students in a variety of activities from historical re-enactment to yachting. Fly HSE, a paragliding club, recently joined the list. The HSE News Service learned how you can get in, the time required to prepare, and whether you can fly in winter.

On January 27, 2017, the HSE Academic Council approved a document regulating support for HSE student organizations at its Moscow campus.

College students now have the opportunity to transfer and continue their studies at HSE in St. Petersburg.

On January 25 the opening ceremony of the German section of the Richard Stites memorial library was held at HSE St. Petersburg. With the Deutsche Forshungsgemeinschaft (DFG) support and help from Department of History Associate Professor Dietmar Wulff more than 150 new books were added to the library’s collection. In addition to classic editions of modern German historiography and fundamental works on all areas of history, the German collection is in line with the History Department’s main research directions, such as the history of empire and nationalism, and technological and environmental history.

Navid Hassanpour, Associate Professor in the Faculty of Social Sciences (School of Political Science) at the Higher School of Economics, is the author of ‘Leading from the Periphery and Network Collective Action’ published by Cambridge University Press in December 2016. He recently spoke with the HSE News Service about his current course at HSE, expansion of the Master’s programme in Applied Political Science, and his plans for upcoming research.

On January 18 at VDNKH, the winter weather failed to stop people from coming out to celebrate the Epiphany with a plunge into icy waters. While traditionally considered a religious event to celebrate the baptism of Jesus, nowadays it has become a famous tradition when people all over Russia go out and immerse themselves in icy waters.

Svetlana Cecovic, Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Humanities (School of Philology), came to the Higher School of Economics with the aim of working in an international environment, which she had become accustomed to during her PhD studies at the University of Louvain in Belgium.
