The latest issue of the HSE LooK brings the Faculty of Mathematics into the spotlight. The Dean of the Faculty, Professor Sergei Lando, speaks about mathematical education in Russia then and now and gives his insights into the academic life of the mathematical collective. Yuval Weber, an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs, has been with HSE since 2014. A specialist in international relations, Weber has held fellowships at the New Economic School and the Carnegie Moscow Center. He recently spoke with HSE news service about his longstanding interest in Russia, his impressions of teaching HSE students and his advice for international students who are thinking about coming to Russia.

HSE would like to congratulate Udara Peiris, Assistant Professor at ICEF on having his article ‘Collateral and the Efficiency of Monetary Policy’ accepted for publication in the international peer-reviewed journal ‘Economic Theory’. The article was coauthored by Alexandros Vardoulakis, Economist at the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System.

Late last year, HSE’s Extreme Sports student club organized a trip for HSE students, instructors, staff, and their friends to an equestrian centre located 150 kilometres away from Nizhny Novgorod, and at the end of winter the club has extended an invitation to one of Georgia’s best ski resorts – Gudauri.

Karl Bruckmeier is an environmental sociologist and since 2011 he has been a professor at the Analysis of Social Institutions Department at the HSE Faculty of Social Sciences. He talked to the HSE English News Service about the challenges of being an interdisciplinary academic and about the pace of change in Russia in attitudes towards the environment. Aleksandra Sazhina (Khamadieva), Lecturer in the School of Management at the HSE Campus in Perm, presented the interim results of her dissertation research at the 2nd International Winter School of the NES Center for the Study of Diversity and Social Interactions. The school was devoted to ‘The Impact of Cultural and Social Diversity in Economic Development’.
