From the 5 -9 August the Fourth Global International Studies Conference organised by the World International Studies Committee took place in Frankfurt. The dean of the the HSE Social Studies Faculty, Andrei Melville, spoke in his capacity as Chairman of the Programme Committee.

‘Factors Affecting the Quality of Engineering Education in the Four Largest Emerging Economies’, an article co-authored by Isak Froumin,Martin Carnoy and Prashant Loyalka, was published in the academic journal Higher Education. The article focuses on assessing the evolving capacity of higher education systems in BRIC countries with respect to producing qualified engineering graduates.

An article by Andrei Melville,  Denis Stukal and Mikhail Mironyuk ‘King of the Mountain’, or Why Postcommunist Autocracies Have Bad Institutions’ was published in the U.S. journal 'Russian Politics and Law'.

Marharyta Fabrykant, Associate Researcher at the HSE Laboratory for Comparative Social Research (LSCR), who studies nationalist views of justice, recently returned following a four-month internship at Columbia University (New York, USA). She spoke with us about her internship.

HSE researchers Timofey Bordachev and Andrei Skriba published a chapter in the LSE’s special report ‘The Geopolitics of Eurasian Economic Integration’.

In February-March 2014, the HSE launched six new international laboratories following a tender of three-year projects under the supervision of leading international researchers. The XI Russian and German research conference on structural reforms to stimulate regional economic growth took place at the HSE Saint Petersburg.

Sociologists have developed a variety of theories and empirical research on social movements that are closely connected with democracy. Why do people join and stay in social movements? What happens to them when participants achieve their goals? Benjamin Lind, Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Sociology and author of the course 'History of Social Movements', explained what makes the subject relevant nowadays and shared his own experience with social movements in an interview for the HSE news service.

On April 23, 2014, Professor Dennis Mueller (University of Vienna, Austria) spoke at the HSE on 'Democracy and Citizenship'. He agreed to speak with the HSE news service to share his views on successful democracy and his impressions of the HSE as an institute.
