From October 7 - November 12, 2016 a school for undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students organized by the International Centre for the History and Sociology of World War II and Its Consequences was held in Germany. The school was dedicated to issues of memorialization and commemorating victims of terror and was led by the Centre’s Director Oleg Budnitskii. The trip was organized with the support of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation.

Following the project public defense held on November 7th-8th, 2016, the winners of the Student Initiative Competition have been announced. This year 84 entries were submitted to the competition, and 34 participants were invited to defend their projects before the Fund Council.

On November 8th, 2016, The HSE Faculty of Business and Management, in cooperation with the ‘Blood Centre’ federal agency, organized a donor campaign which aims to help people needing an urgent blood transfusion.

On November 4th, 2016, students from many countries took part in an online broadcast to discuss the final stage of the US presidential campaign 2016. The event was organized by the Global Campus Network at Ryerson University, Toronto. Two students from HSE's Faculty of Communications, Media, and Design delivered their report from the HSE Media Centre.

This year 84 applications were submitted for participation in the competition. Almost 4000 people took part in the first stage of the selection, consisting of expert reviews and public evaluation of the proposals.

A team from the HSE Faculty of Law, including 3rd and 4th–year law students Alexander Zhdanovich, Ksenia Solovieva, Gayane Gulian and Yulia Dragunova, took second place at the regional finals of the Foreign Direct Investment International Arbitration Moot Court Competition, recently held in Poland, Warsaw. Gayane Gulian was also awarded a prize as the second runner-up in the ‘best speaker’ category.

On Sunday, October 16, 2016, the Moscow Subregional Contest of the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest (ACM ICPC) will take place at HSE. The Faculty of Computer Science will serve as a contest hosts for the second year in a row. To take part in the quarter finals, a team of three students must be formed and registered before October 9 (23:59:59).

On September 26th, 2016,  the 2nd International Student Conference ‘Russia and Egypt: Joint Future’ was held at HSE. The event was organized by the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs with the support of the Egyptian Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs and the Egyptian Youth National Organization. Students and doctoral students from Cairo University and several Russian universities took part in the event.

The Student Initiative Support Centre has announced that applications are now being accepted for the 2016 Autumn Student Project Competition.  There are no limits to project themes; they may involve an adaptation or media project, as well as cover sports, cultural or social topics. The main idea is that they are supposed to bring an improvement to HSE. Applications can be submitted by both individuals and groups, but projects must be led by an HSE student.

HSE has gradually begun transitioning payment of scholarships to VTB 24 cards. Cards will initially be issued to first-year Bachelor’s, Specialist and Master’s students. Scholarship payments for first-year students will be transferred only to VTB 24 cards.

This summer, Milena Rubleva, a fourth-year student of Journalism at HSE, presented a visualization of her study at the Connected Life 2016: Collective Action and the Internet Conference. She told the HSE News Service about the conference that was hosted by PhD students at the Oxford Internet Institute, which is part of the University of Oxford.
