The concept of international mobility is an integral part of university life. In the Middle Ages, students were already moving around Europe constantly, since they knew that it was better to study law in Bologna, theology in Paris, and medicine in Salerno. Today, international exchange of information on research and teaching methods, studies abroad, and visits by foreign lecturers and researchers are essential for the development of any university. Innovation and education markets have become truly global.

Successful international cooperation is a challenge for HSE, but at the same time, it provides new opportunities. Our university is young and is not as recognized abroad as many of its partners whose history dates back for centuries. Cooperation with them is a big responsibility, and competition with them is a big challenge. HSE is almost the same age as post-Soviet Russia, which means that it has a good opportunity to prove that it can achieve a lot within such a short term. Vibrancy and innovation in research and education are our competitive advantages, our ‘trademark’ on the global market.

Words such as ‘competition’, ‘market’, and ‘ranking’ have become part and parcel of the university vocabulary. But they shouldn’t disorient us: what is truly important in international university cooperation remains the willingness of HSE teachers, researchers, and students to learn something new, to share their knowledge, to expand their horizons, to improve their qualifications, and, finally, to find new friends in their professional areas. More and more professionals from various countries are coming to work or study at HSE. We offer them new opportunities to grow in their fields of interest, but, at the same time, we make Russia open to them and make sure that they go home willing to come back again…

International cooperation today is undoubtedly an important, complicated and multidimensional sphere that in many ways determines the university’s successful development. But let one of its dimensions remain the romance of wandering student goliards, which keeps the spirit of the best university traditions. While HSE is a young university, it has the ability to preserve and enrich these traditions.
