Bogdan Potanin (HSE University) has published an article titled "Double machine learning for a partially linear model with endogenous treatments and multivariate sample selection" in the journal Statistics and Computing. The paper proposes double machine learning (DML) estimators for a partially linear model with endogenous treatments and multivariate sample selection. Asymptotic normality of the estimators is proved under mild regularity conditions, and their finite sample properties are studied on simulated data. The proposed approach is extended to the case of endogenous switching and is illustrated by estimating the Engel curve using RLMS-HSE data.

Natalia Rozenfeld, a Junior Research Fellow and Doctoral Student at the HSE Institute of Education's Centre for Vocational Education and Skills Development, presented her research at the 2026 Annual Conference of the European Consortium for Sociological Research (ECSR), which was held at Trinity College Dublin. Taking place on 15–17 June, the conference focused on how social institutions shape inequality in education, employment, and other areas of life, bringing together researchers who study the ways societies respond to growing uncertainty and structural change.

On May 20, a preliminary discussion of the PhD dissertation by Olga Rodina, a PhD-student and research intern at the International Laboratory for Population and Health, took place. Her dissertation is titled “Realization of Reproductive Intentions: Causes and Consequences of Timing Changes.”

HSE researchers have found that the likelihood of quitting smoking rises with increasing financial struggles. While low levels of financial difficulties do not affect smoking behaviour, moderate financial stress can increase the probability of quitting by 13% to 21%. Responses to high financial stress differ by gender: men are almost 1.5 times more likely to give up cigarettes than under normal conditions, whereas no significant effect is observed on women’s decisions to quit smoking. These conclusions are based on data from the Russia Longitudinal Monitoring Survey (RLMS-HSE) for 2000–2023 and have been published in Monitoring of Public Opinion: Economic and Social Changes.

The first semi-final of the new season of Science Battles took place at VDNKh. Four researchers from the Moscow, St Petersburg, and Nizhny Novgorod campuses of HSE University came together on one stage to prove that science recognises neither geographical nor disciplinary boundaries. The theme of the evening—Conquering Mountain Peaks—perfectly reflected the spirit of the competition: chemical formulas, social problems, psychology, and law all appeared side by side.
