Seminar: “Sources of Labor Productivity Growth after the 1998 and 2008 Crises in Russia”

This seminar by the Russia KLEMS group was held on April 30. Ilya Voskoboynikov presented an analysis of the sources of labor productivity growth in the Russian economy after the crises of 1998 and 2008, highlighting measures to restore the economy after the shock associated with the coronavirus epidemic. The seminar examined which sources of growth in which sectors could drive such a recovery. How the Russian economy recovered: sources of labor productivity growth after the crises of 1998 and 2008.

The coronavirus epidemic has led to a production slump that is likely to exceed the fall in 2009. Although the crisis has not yet passed and there is still uncertainty about the scale of its consequences, discussions have begun on measures to restore the economy. How quickly and in which industries should recovery be expected? What sources of growth could be the drivers of such a recovery?

The Russian economy experienced major crises in 1998 and in 2008. They were different in nature and the post-crises recoveries led to growth fueled by different sources. The seminar, using Russia KLEMS data, looked at both crises to identify which elements of the two models of Russian economic recovery could be realized in the coming years.
