On June 16-18, the international conference on anthropology ‘Bordering Religion in (Post) Cold War Worlds’ was held at HSE St. Petersburg. The event was organized by Angie Heo from the University of Chicago Divinity School (USA) and Zhanna Kormina, HSE Professor.

Taking Education from the 19th Century to the 21st

For the first time ever, the leaders of education studies centres from some of the world’s leading research universities met at the HSE Academic Centre in Pushkin, Russia. At the meeting, the researchers, along with a representative from OECD, discussed how education studies departments should change to meet the global challenges that face the sphere of education.

Competition and Cooperation

On April 19th, 2016, a seminar on ‘Federalism and Regionalism in Russia and Germany’ took place at HSE in St. Petersburg as part of the 13th German Week in St. Petersburg. The seminar was organized by the Department of History and the Department of Political Science at HSE in St. Petersburg together with the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany in St. Petersburg and the Forum of Federations.

In January 2016, six university research centres representing countries in North America, South America, Europe, Asia, and Africa came together to form an international consortium whose main objective is to develop a strategy for carrying out comparative higher education research in various regions around the world.

St. Petersburg’s Gastronomic Brand Goes International

Scholars at HSE St. Petersburg have published their research in a new monograph for international tourism professionals. Dr. Valery Gordin, Deputy Director of HSE St. Petersburg and Head of the Laboratory of Cultural Economics, together with Dr. Julia Trabskaya, Leading Research Fellow at Laboratory of Cultural Economics, authored a chapter for a book entitled ‘Tourism Management, Marketing, and Development. Performance, Strategies, and Sustainability’. Palgrave Macmillan, a leading global publisher, issued this volume in December 2015.

The only way to detect weaknesses in one’s own ideas is to expose them to criticism from colleagues, says Eric Maskin, winner of the Nobel Prize in Economics in 2007, Chairman of the HSE International Advisory Committee, and chief researcher at the International Laboratory of Decision Choice and Analysis. The HSE news service recently spoke with him and Fuad Aleskerov, head of the Laboratory, about the the value of other people's opinions, joint research projects and opportunities for international cooperation in our time.

HSE Expanding International Cooperation in the Humanities

In 2016, the Higher School of Economics will be the first Russian university to become an associate member of a large project being carried out by the Freie Universität Berlin’s Dahlem Humanities Center. The project, entitled the Thematic Network Principles of Cultural Dynamics, aims to strengthen international cooperation in humanities research. Its objective is to study the factors that affect the cultural processes in the history of humanity’s development.  

Minorities in Asia and Africa in Focus

HSE St Petersburg initiated and organised an international conference on Minorities and Conflicts: Asian and African States in the Modern World.  Academics from Russia, South Korea, South Africa, Turkey and Armenia gathered for the event on 9th and 10th October.
