On March 13, the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs’ Asian Club held a meeting where Professor Makhan Lal, Director of the Delhi Institute of Heritage Research and Management and Director of the Vikvekanand International Foundation, spoke on ‘Traditional Culture and Modern India’. He kindly agreed to give an interview to the HSE news service and share his thoughts on the role of traditional culture and values in modern society.
Dr. Marek Dabrowski became a Professor at the HSE Faculty of Economics in 2014 where he teaches a Master’s course in Macroeconomic Policy in Transition and Emerging Economies. The XVI April International Academic Conference on Economic and Social Development is scheduled to take place from April 7-10, 2015, but plans are already underway among the organizers and participants alike. Recently, Dale Jorgenson, Samuel W. Morris University Professor of Economics at Harvard University, spoke with the HSE news service about his long history of cooperation with HSE. Professor Jorgenson, an internationally recognized expert on information technology and economic growth, among other subjects, shared his expectations for this year’s conference.
On November 19-20, 2014, HSE hosted the conference ‘Global Governance: Nominal, Real and Alternative Structures’. The conference focused largely on the paradigm shift in geopolitical and geoeconomic structures of the modern world, as well as the underlying causes and long-term implications of such changes. Professor Alan Cafruny of Hamilton College in Clinton, New York, presented a paper at the Conference focused on the crisis of Europe’s economic and monetary union. We talked with Professor Cafruny as he shared his opinion on the union, Germany’s role in NATO, and much more.
A group from Brazil’s Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais visited the HSE to participate in a seminar that was part of the ‘Russia-Brazil Major Sport Events: Social Commotion in Global Media’ joint project.
If universities were people, then the 203-year-old University of Oslo (UiO) would be the great grandfather of the Higher School of Economics, which was founded in 1992. It is remarkable, however, that despite of the age gap, the student populations of the two universities are comparable in size. The UiO – almost the same size as the HSE but having 10 times more experience – is therefore definitely one of the best partners to learn best practices from.
From October 7-9, the second annual ‘Dynamic Middle Ages’ school of young medievalists took place in Moscow. After its conclusion, participants talked about what they find interesting in the Middle Ages and the parallels they see between those times and today.
On September 20, the three-day international conference ‘Modern Econometric Tools and Applications’ came to an end at HSE’s Nizhny Novgorod campus. The conference was organized by the Higher School of Economics and the New Economic School (NES). Academics from Canada, France, Great Britain, and other countries discussed cutting-edge research in the field of theoretical and applied econometrics, in particular stochastic economic processes.
Professor of the HSE School of Design in the Faculty of Сommunications, Media and Design Ulyana Aristova and senior lecturer Tatiana Avvakumova represented Russia at the international conference Decoratia in Futura at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts.
‘The Human Dimension of Time’, an international research and educational seminar, is taking place at HSE’s Perm campus from August 27-30. HSE Perm is happy to welcome academics and researchers from the Netherlands, Italy, Israel, Tashkent, Odessa, Moscow, St. Petersburg and Novosibirsk to the event.
