In Russia, demand for law comes primarily from the state rather than from society. The adoption of simple and clear directly effective laws, the expansion of juries and the active use of information technologies could enhance interest on the part of the citizenry in issues of law and law enforcement, noted participants in the plenary session ‘Demand for Law: Factors and Driving Forces’, which was held at the XVI April International Academic Conference on Economic and Social Development at HSE.

Lauren McCarthy, PhD, is Assistant Professor of Political Science and Legal Studies at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and Associate Research Fellow in the HSE International Center for the Study of Institutions and Development. She will talk about her research on Russian law enforcement and human trafficking at the XVI April Conference. The HSE English News service asked her about her experience of living and working as an international researcher in Moscow.
The project aims to comprehensively cover the role of courts in the development of law and promote the integration of Russian court practice into the international information environment.
