Every summer since 2007, the Center for Institutional Studies at the National Research University Higher School of Economics has been organizing the annual Russian Summer School on Institutional Analysis (RSSIA). Students and researchers from around the world convene in Moscow to enjoy a whole week of lectures and consultations, presentations, discussions and networking, as well as the opportunity to be inspired by the experts.

Academic Research and Letting Go — Israel’s Technology Transfer Success Story

Almost half of all Israeli exports are produced by hi-tech companies. They make up more than 11% of GDP which is the highest (on a par with the USA) among leading industrial countries. Michael Zinigrad, Rector of Ariel University, will give a public lecture at HSE on the 29th October about how Israel has produced stunning results in commercialising academic research.

ICSID Conference — an Annual Academic Highlight for Russian Political Economists

On 29th June — 1st July the International Centre for the Study of Institutions and Development (ICSID) at HSE Moscow will hold its fourth annual conference. The theme this year is Institutions, Elites and Collective Action in the Developing World. Michael Rochlitz, Assistant Professor at the School of Political Science at the HSE Faculty of Social Sciences is among the impressive line-up of international specialists in the field who will be speaking at the conference. The HSE English News Service asked him about the focus of the 2015 conference, what new things it has in store and why he thinks it is definitely something to get excited about.

'I Gulped down Ginzburg’s Article with Greedy, Insatiable Pleasure'

On 1st to 3rd June, the remarkable Italian historian and one of the founders of microhistory, Carlo Ginzburg will give a series of open lectures at the HSE. Professor Ginzburg has been invited to Moscow by the Poletayev Institute for Theoretical and Historical Studies in the Humanities (IGITI). His translator, Professor at the School of Philosophy, Sergey Kozlov spoke to the HSE News Service about how he was inspired to translate Ginzburg’s work into Russian which led to them becoming firm friends.

Starting a New International Journal on Russian Politics

A new academic journal, Russian Politics, has just been launched by Brill Academic Publishers (Leiden, Netherlands and Boston, USA). Three members of the editorial board are representatives of the Higher School of Economics — Professor Andrei Melville, Dean of Faculty of Social Sciences, Professor Nikolay Petrov and Professor Rostislav Turovsky. The first issue will be published in early 2016 and there will be four issues per year.

Historian and Demographer Focuses on the Role of Forced Displacement in Population History

On Tuesday, May 19, at 6.00 pm, Alain Blum (Centre d’études franco-russe de Moscou, INED and EHESS in Paris) will give a talk at the International Research Seminar in Sociology (School of Sociology) called ‘Forgotten stories of deportees in the USSR — The multiple lives of a single individual’. Ahead of his lecture, he has spoken with the HSE news service on a variety of topics, including his experience as a demographer, his transition into Soviet history, and his upcoming research plans.

Professor Explores Links between Literature, Landscape and the Natural World

On May 15, Dr James Canton of the University of Essex will deliver a lecture at HSE on ‘Wild Writing’, a form of literature that emerged in the mid-twentieth century as a novel way of understanding the urban landscape and nature. The author of numerous publications focused primarily on British travel writing in Arabia, Dr Canton’s lecture will focus on a discussion of local Essex landscapes.

HSE to Provide Platform for Discussion of Civil Society Influence Strategies in BRICS Countries

Which methods and practices do civil activists use in BRICS countries? Why and under what conditions can they be effective? What can Russian civil society learn from civil society in India or Brazil, and vice versa? These issues will be discussed at a conference to be held on May 19 jointly by the HSE Department of Public Policy and Oxfam, an international non-governmental organization. Registration for the seminar is open to Russian and foreign experts, researchers, students and representatives of NGOs.
