HSE has hosted the first patient conference ‘Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS): sharing experience to help people with ALS. The event was organized by a group of relatives of people with ALS, in conjunction with the Federal State Public Scientific Institution ‘Neurological Science Centre’, and the ALS Support Service at the Miloserdie medical centre. The HSE’s International College of Economics and Finance and the Laboratory for Experimental and Behavioral Economics acted as co-organizers. Volunteers, psychologists, and doctors in various specialties who are involved in treating people with ALS also took part.

Can Everything in Science Be Measured?

Giorgio Sirilli, Associate Research Director at Italy’s Research Institute on Sustainable Economic Growth of National Research Council (IRCrES), active participant and former chair of the OECD Working Party of National Experts on Science and Technology Indicators (NESTI), and author of over 200 academic publications, gave an open lecture at HSE on January 21, 2015, as part of the Governance of Science, Technology and Innovation MA programme.

A Fresh Look at the Dynamics of Political Radicalization

On 12 January, Chares Demetriou presented his book The Dynamics of Radicalization: A Relational and Comparative Perspective at a seminar of the Laboratory for Economic-Sociological Research. His main research interests are in issues of legitimacy and political violence, social movements and nationalism. In his lecture, Demetriou presented new ways of analysing the radicalisation of political groups.

At the International Institute of Administration and Business, Christian Gueritte of the Total Professors Association gave a masterclass on Oil and Gas and Global Energy Issues.Total has been operating in Russia since 1991 and is one of the key partners of Russian oil and gas companies in the exploration and production of hydrocarbons.

Professor Charles Bingham, a prominent Canadian philosopher of education from Simon Fraser University in Vancouver is currently visiting HSE’s Institute of Education. As part of his visit, Professor Bingham gave a talk on schooled epistemology at the postgraduate seminar and conducted a master class on teaching techniques. 

Contemporary Management: Developing Research and Researchers

Three events in one at the HSE Faculty of Management combined an academic seminar of young management researchers, the seventh annual research conference ‘Contemporary management problems: exploring the boundaries’ and the first international conference on network analysis. The speakers and audience were the same for all three.

General Search for Knowledge of Self and Society

On November 19-20, 2014, HSE hosted the conference ‘Global Governance: Nominal, Real and Alternative Structures’. The conference focused largely on the paradigm shift in geopolitical and geoeconomic structures of the modern world, as well as the underlying causes and long-term implications of such changes. Professor Alan Cafruny of Hamilton College in Clinton, New York, presented a paper at the Conference focused on the crisis of Europe’s economic and monetary union. We talked with Professor Cafruny as he shared his opinion on the union, Germany’s role in NATO, and much more.

Professor William Pyle from Middlebury Collage gave a seminar about research into Russia's business lobby. In 2014, together with Finnish economist Laura Solanko, he received the National Award for Applied Economics, which was established by organizations including the HSE.
