‘The Competition Lets Students Feel Like Scientists’
On February 5, 2024, the award ceremony for the winners and laureates of the Student Research Paper Competition (SRPS) 2023 took place. The competition received 1,730 papers in 25 categories from university students across Russia.
Scientarium: Driving Young Scientists’ Development
In September, HSE University’s Voronovo Study Centre hosted ‘Scientarium: Young Researcher School’, a retreat for undergraduate and graduate students engaged in scientific activities. The Scientarium project started in 2021 in an online format, and was later held in the format of an educational retreat for the first time in autumn 2023. This year, the Young Researcher School brought together students from different universities across Russia.
‘People and Society’: HSE University Hosts NAUKA 0+ All-Russian Festival
On October 7, a ‘People and Society’ thematic platform opened at HSE University’s Cultural Centre as part of the NAUKA 0+ science festival. Guests were able to explore the world of scientific discoveries and interesting experiments, as well as listen to a series of lectures from leading HSE experts.
Scientarium: Integrating Student Scientific Associations and HSE University Projects
In early July, the Voronovo Study Centre hosted Scientarium, an off-site session for representatives of HSE University student research communities organised by the university’s Centre for Student Academic Development and Unit for the Popularisation of Science. More than 50 students from 10 scientific student associations and three campuses took part.
Second Congress of Young Scientists: Students Are Ready to Implement Breakthrough Projects
The 2nd Congress of Young Scientists was held at the Sirius Park of Science and Art in Sochi. HSE University representatives took an active part in it, working at various venues where a wide range of topics were discussed—from university development to machine learning and scientific cinema.
HSE University Announces Results of Mirror Labs 2022 Competition
The Mirror Labs research project competition is aimed at HSE University departments that are planning to conduct joint studies with other Russian universities and research centres. The competition is now in its third year. A total of 19 academic organisations from 14 regions of Russia submitted applications as partners of HSE University, including 9 organisations participating for the first time.
‘Students Play a Vital Role in the Development of University Research’
HSE University provides students with opportunities for academic development from the undergraduate level onwards. Now that another open enrolment session for research assistant positions has recently come to an end, more than 250 young researchers are starting their careers and combining work and study at the university.
Registration Opens for ‘Research Initiative’ Team Project Competition
The HSE Centre for Student Academic Development has started accepting applications for the third ‘Research Initiative’ student team research project competition. Bachelor’s and master’s students from all HSE campuses are eligible to participate. The competition gives students an opportunity to not only take on research roles, but also to try their hand at working as academic managers and supervisors of a small research team. Registration will remain open until February 28.
‘It Was Interesting to Showcase a Unique Student Project’
Held as part of the Second New Knowledge Marathon, the fourth HSE Science Battles attracted a wide audience. HSE Students Frol Sapronov, Marina Kasyulina, and Vsevolod Nikolsky took part in the competition’s new televised format to demonstrate how to talk about science vividly and in simple terms understandable to any audience.

The winners of the Student Research Paper Competition were given their awards at HSE University on Pokrovsky Boulevard. The ‘Outstanding Alumni Endowment’ scholarship was given to the authors of the best works in the ‘Economics’, ‘Sociology’ and ‘Political Science’ categories.

From Application to Grant: How HSE University Prepares Future Researchers
In the beginning of 2020, six student research projects received funding from the HSE Centre for Student Academic Development (CSAD). The projects had been selected in a competition in which participants presented their research plans and the expected outcomes. At a reporting online seminar in July, team leaders summarized their achievements over the six months and spoke about how their work has been impacted by the pandemic.
Popularizing the Humanities vs. the Natural Sciences
Hearing about research advances in medicine, biology, or physics in public discourse is a common occurrence. However, the question of whether scholarly activity in the social sciences and the humanities should be popularized has always been left unanswered. What are the features of communication between humanities and society and the media? Are different fields of knowledge popularized differently? Physicists, linguists, sociologists, science communicators, and journalists discussed this question on the eve of the Day of Russian Science at the Total Dictation Conference in Moscow.

HSE’s Annual Student Research Paper Competition Now Open
HSE’s annual student research paper competition has begun accepting applications for the 2019 cycle. The competition is open not only to students of HSE University but to students of any university, both in Russia and abroad. You can submit research papers in Russian or in English. The application deadline is October 15.
HSE University Takes Grand Prix in 2019 Communication Laboratory Award
The 3rd National Forum of Research Communicators came to a close in St. Petersburg with the traditional announcement of the Communication Laboratory Award winners. HSE University was awarded the Grand Prix for its high standards of communication in all fields.

Winners of Student Research Paper Competition Awarded at 15th Annual Award Ceremony at HSE
Last week, over 140 HSE students and graduates were awarded certificates in honour of the quality of their research in HSE’s 2018 Research Paper Competition. In addition to receiving the traditional awards, guests received some exciting news: 1) students are now invited to participate in SciCasting, a research blogger competition; and 2) the winners of the 2018 research paper competition will receive travel grants.
