Excused absence from classes or assessments for legitimate reasons

Supporting Documents

It is possible to confirm absence for valid reasons with the following documents:

  • A medical certificate in the 095/y form if the absence is due to health reasons.
  • Another document, in case of circumstances that prevented the student from attending classes.

Documents must be submitted via the Student Service Centre’s electronic service if the absence from classes or assessments has impacted the outcome of the course.

Deadlines

  • A medical certificate in the 095/у form must be provided on the day specified as "return to studies" or the day following the last day of illness indicated in the certificate.
  • Documents confirming other reasons for absence must be submitted within three academic days after the missed class/exam.

Procedure for Submitting Medical Certificates

A medical certificate, strictly in the 095/y form, should be submitted through the medical certificate submission and verification service on the day specified as "return to studies." Students do not need to provide a copy or original of the certificate to the academic office. Certificates submitted after the specified date will not be accepted.

Other valid reasons must be confirmed with supporting documents online via the Student Service Centre’s electronic service no later than three working days after the missed class/exam. The decision on whether the reason is valid will be made after document verification.

Applications are processed jointly by staff at the Student Service Centre and programme offices. The Centre carries out a technical review of the application and forwards it to the degree programme's manager for further action on recognising the reason for absence as valid. The Centre handles the centralised verification of all medical certificates (including requests to the clinic).

What reasons are considered valid

Valid excuses for absence from an assessment may include illness, as confirmed by a medical certificate, or other exceptional circumstances. To be recognised as valid, supporting documents must be verified by submitting an application via the Student Service Centre’s electronic service.

Work-related reasons, such as business trips and office hours, are not considered valid excuses.

Important: If you attend an assessment (either in person or online) but realise you cannot participate due to health reasons, you must declare this before receiving the task or, if the assessment is asynchronous, notify the academic office and the instructor no later than the final submission deadline. In both cases, this will be recorded as a "no-show." (Clause 40 of the Regulations)

Important: If you choose to withdraw from an assessment after completing part of the work, it will be graded according to established criteria. If you withdraw and have not completed any part of the work, it will be recorded as a grade of "0," regardless of whether a medical certificate is submitted before or after the withdrawal. (Clause 40 of the Regulations)
