Course Syllabus

Course Syllabus is an official document that outlines the structure and content of a course, its role within the broader curriculum, the goals of instruction, and the methods of teaching and assessment. It provides a framework for student learning and clarifies expectations for both students and instructors.

Each course syllabus contains the following information:

● Course objectives and expected learning outcomes

● Course content and the sequence of topics covered

● Types of classes (e.g., lectures, seminars, practical sessions)

● Assessment components and grading criteria

● Required and recommended reading materials

● Rules for communication and interaction with the instructor

● Any additional course-specific policies

Why the Syllabus Matters

Students are strongly encouraged to review syllabi in advance of the course start date. This allows them to prepare relevant questions for the instructor, understand course expectations and workload, and plan their academic schedule more effectively.

Publication and Access

The syllabus is published on the university’s online portal no later than five days before the beginning of the module in which the course is offered.

All course syllabi are available in the official HSE course catalogue: http://www.hse.ru/edu/courses/.

Revisions to the Syllabus

Instructors may revise syllabi after publication due to changes in course content or delivery—any such modifications will be communicated to students via corporate email or SmartLMS. Two types of changes are permitted:

1. Content Updates

When subject matter evolves, instructors may:

● Reorganise topics

● Modify readings

● Adjust instructional approaches

2. Changes to Assessment Components

Instructors may make minor changes to the number or format of non-exam assessments. In such cases:

● Students must be notified of the changes and the reasons for them no later than three days before the affected assessment

● Students may appeal the changes to their academic supervisor within three days of receiving the notice

● The academic supervisor will issue a final decision. If the changes are not approved, the supervisor will notify the instructor via email

3. Changes to Exam Procedures

If changes are made to examination procedures during the exam period, instructors must:

● Announce them during the final class session before the exam period starts, or

● For asynchronous courses, provide written notice via SmartLMS no later than five days before the exam week begins

In the event of disagreements with an instructor regarding the syllabus, students may seek assistance from the manager of their programme’s study office or the staff of the Department Service Centre.
