Support for the Older Generation
Support for the older generation is currently one of the most important fields of vounteering.
Our volunteers remotely help seniors who participate in the joint project of HSE University and Moscow Longevity project, to practice foreign languages: English and French. In the new academic year, we plan to introduce new languages.
Almost 100 pensioners are now taking part in the project. Few times a week they meet online with HSE University volunteers via Skype or WhatsApp for short sessions. Of course, we understand that the level of knowledge varies among different people, so we select volunteers taking this into account. By the way, international students are also involved in the project. They teach more advanced students and even conduct improvised exams with them.
Volunteers and their students discuss culture and art, weather and traveling, develop their own training programmes and share them with other volunteer-student pairs. This way, HSE students and employees can not only help active people of retirement age during the period of continuing restrictions due to the spread of coronavirus but also practice their own language and communication skills.

Everything is perfect. Punctuality, and politeness, and intelligence, and erudition, and knowledge of subject of my teacher. Our classes are diverse and interesting. Besides conversations, volunteer sends additional materials, interesting and informative videos which allow to get acquainted with fluent speech of native speakers, etc. She is wonderful, very friendly and responsible. We are certainly studying for more than 10 minutes. Thank you, HSE. Amazing project!

Petrukhina Natalia Anatolievna, Small-talk project participant
The volunteer was patient, punctual, polite. The classes with her helped me a lot. I began to speak English more freely, the «tightness» and fear disappeared. I was preparing for the classes, selecting more interesting materials for discussions. Thank you very much for your help, HSE.
