Matthew Lenoe's talk: «Emotions and Psychological Survival in the Red Army, 1941-1942»

Event ended

Many scholars to date have been concerned with Red Army soldiers' attitudes toward the Stalinist regime during World War II, and their level of commitment to Stalin personally and/or to Communism.  This paper takes a different approach to questions of soldiers' morale and willingness to fight, by looking at ways in which they sought to manage their emotions, as revealed in their letters and diaries.

Matthew Lenoe is Associate Professor of History at University of Rochester, and the author of The Kirov Murder and Soviet History (Yale University Press, 2010) and Closer to the Masses!  Stalinist Culture, Social Revolution, and Soviet Newspapers (Harvard University Press, 2004).

The seminar will take place on June 22 at 5 pm at Moscow, Staraya Basmannaya 21/4, building L, room L-401.

We kindly ask our guests to order a pass to the building in advance at worldwar2@hse.ru
