Anthony Heywood's presentation «From the Dardanelles to the Urals: the logistics of Russia's war with the Ottoman Empire (1914-17)»

Event ended

This paper identifies and analyses the logistical implications of Russia's war with the Ottoman Empire during 1914-17. It shows that this conflict had some very far-reaching logistical ramifications for the entire Russian war effort. On this basis it argues that this war, and the Caucasus Front in particular, should not be seen as a "sideshow": it significance was far greater than that. In fact, it is more appropriate to think of Russia's First World War as a complex two-front war.

Anthony Heywood, Professor of History at the University of Aberdeen, is a specialist in the history of revolutionary Russia and is co-organizer and co-editor of the centennial book series Russia's Great War and Revolution 1914-22 (Slavica Press, 2014- ). With a particular research interest in the history of the railway system in the early twentieth century, he has published monographs on Soviet imports of railway equipment in the early 1920s and on the life of the railway engineer Iurii V. Lomonosov. He is currently completing a monograph about the history of Russia's railways in the First World War.
