The LCSR conference " Comparative Sociology in Quantitative Perspective " took place in Moscow from 25th to 28th of November. It was an important event in the life of the laboratory, because the first results of the researchers work were summed up.
The regular workshop of the series "Culture Matters" was held on 24th November. Prof. Andrey Belik (Center for Ethnopolitical Research, Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology, leading research associate) made the report "Impact of culture on economic behavior".
From November,10 to November,18 within the activities of the International laboratory for Education Policy Analysis at the Institute for Educational Studies series of advanced training seminars "World experience of overcoming the corruption" were conducted by professor Charles Richard Rose - director of Centre for the Study of Public Policy (University of Aberdeen).
From November, 14 to November, 18 within the activities of the International laboratory for Education Policy Analysis at the Institute for Educational Studies series of advanced training seminars "Newest tendencies in the American and European sociological ideas" were undertaken by the well-known English sociologist, honored professor of Loughborough University Dennis Smith.
The regular seminar of the ILSCR “Culture matters” took place on 17th November. The speaker was Ronald Fisher, senior lecturer at Victoria University (Wellington, New Zealand), with a lecture "What is more important for well-being: money or autonomy?".
On November, 17th, 2011 Richard Rose, Director of the Centre for the Study of Public Policy and 6th Century Chair in Politics (University of Aberdeen) gave a talk on “Thinking Conceptually, Analyzing Empirically: The New Europe Barometer”.
On November, 10th, 2011 Andrey Scherbak (research fellow at the LCSR) gave a talk on “Nationalism in Russian republics: historical and comparative perspective”.
Russia takes up the 89th place in the World Values Survey happiness rating with a negative level of happiness. Eduard Ponarin, a sociologist and professor at Higher School of Economics tells why Russians feel rather miserable than happy.
Dr Panos Pardalos is a Distinguished Professor at the University of Florida. He is also the Director of the Center for Applied Optimization. Dr Pardalos obtained a PhD degree from the University of Minnesota in Computer and Information Sciences. He has held visiting appointments at Princeton University, the DIMACS Center, the Institute of Mathematics and Applications, the FIELDS In stitute, AT&T Labs Research, Trier University, the Linkoping Institute of Technology and Universities in Greece. He has received numerous awards including University of Florida Research Foundation Professor, International Educator Award, Doctoral Dissertation Advisor/Mentoring Award, Foreign Member of the Royal Academy of Doctors (Spain), Foreign Member of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences, Foreign Member of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, Foreign Member of the Petrovskaya Academy of Sciences and Arts (Russia) and Honorary Member of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences. Dr Pardalos has received the degrees of Honorary Doctor from Lobachevski University (Russia) and the V.M. Glushkov Institute of Cybernetics (Ukraine). He is a fellow of AAAS, a fellow of INFORMS and in 2001 he was awarded the Greek National Award and Gold Medal for Operations Research. Dr Pardalos is a world leading expert in Global and Combinatorial Optimization. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Global Optimization, the Journal of Optimization Letters and the Journal of Computational Management Science. In addition, he is the managing editor of a number of book series and a member of the editorial board of several international journals. He is the author of several books and edited volumes. He has written numerous articles and has developed several wellknown software packages. His research is supported by the National Science Foundation, the National Institute of Health and other government organizations.
