HSE University Newsletter

Dear HSE University Partners and Friends,

Thank you for your kind greetings, your solidarity and ongoing support. I hope you had a healthy and positive start to 2021 and are achieving success despite the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

We are pleased to present the new edition of the HSE University Newsletter, which shares the most exciting education and science news from the first quarter of 2021 and gives an update on the upcoming events that we view as essential for international higher education and cooperation.

First, allow me to draw your attention to an interview where HSE Rector Yaroslav Kuzminov discusses future trends in education.

We are also excited to let you know that HSE University is returning to in-person classes starting March 29. We Are Looking Forward to Seeing international students. The students who will not be able to travel to Russia immediately and will still have to stay at home, continue studying remotely.  Prospective international students will be able to attend regular Zoom consultations offered by the HSE Education & Training Advisory Centre to guide them through a wide range of our educational programmes, scholarships and grants, as well as university life matters.

HSE University’s study offices produced a noteworthy analysis of the impact of remote learning on the quality of education by comparing two study periods: 2019-2020 and 2020-2021. The results demonstrate that neither teaching nor the quality of courses have worsened, while average grades have even seen slight improvements.

We are proud to share that HSE University has expanded its presence in the top 50 of QS subject rankings, placing in two additional subject rankings. These achievements are largely the result of joint efforts on the part of the whole university community supported by the university strategy and Russian Academic Excellence Project 5-100 along with engaging in Russian and international partnerships and networks. Focusing on achieving leadership both nationally and internationally, HSE University pays special attention to internationalization of its internal environment as an important condition required for the University to successfully integrate into the international academic environment.

We welcome your feedback on topics to cover in future HSE University Newsletters and to receiving more news from you. We are also glad to receive newsletters from our partners, which we feature on the International Partnerships website.

We are of the firm belief that each of our partnerships gives us valuable opportunities and enriches our knowledge. We hope to continue our fruitful cooperation and wish you the very best in all your endeavours.

Yours sincerely,

Ivan Prostakov

Vice-Rector for International Relations

Choosing to Study in Russia. Why do international students choose Russian universities?

Most international students in Russia come from CIS countries, or former Soviet republics in Central Asia, the Caucasus, and Eastern Europe. The preserved social and cultural links promote this, as well as students’ good command of Russian. Students from outside the former Soviet Union come to Russia primarily due to economic reasons and the strong reputation of Russia’s leading universities. At the same time, however, they often see Russia as an unsafe country and consider it a backup plan. These are the findings of a study conducted by Alena Nefedova, Senior Research Fellow, Associate Professor at the HSE Institute for Statistical Studies and Economics of Knowledge.
