HSE University Newsletter

Dear HSE University Partners and Friends,

We are pleased to present the new edition of the HSE University Newsletter to share the most exciting education and science news of July-September Quarter 2020 with you, and update you on the upcoming events which may be interesting for your universities' audience.

We are grateful for your solidarity and support in the unprecedented pandemic situation and thank you for keeping us informed on the measures implemented at your universities. The COVID-19 situation related information is available on the HSE University web-site which is being updated regularly. It also presents new initiatives born by our university students and staff to help the HSE community to work and study in the time of the pandemic.

I am pleased to let you know that HSE University has been increasingly attractive and competitive both for Russian and international students. In 2020-2021 a.y., there were 9 324 international  applicants (vs 8 943 international applicants in 2019) from 156 countries; of these 2214 international applicants were admitted  to our bachelor’s and master’s  programmes, which demonstrates a 11% increase of international admission as compared with 2019.

We started a new academic year on 1 September, when classes began on-campus incl. HSE International Preparatory Programmes. HSE University takes all necessary actions to ensure the safety and health of all members of the university community and wearing masks in university buildings and dormitories is mandatory for all students and teachers as well as compliance with all other necessary sanitary measures. HSE University arranges online learning with mandatory support from professors for newly enrolled international students who are currently unable to travel to Russia.

In 2020 the world changed, and so did HSE University. With an ambitious goal of doing the impossible - include everything in the programme that we could not do previously at the usual open-air festival and still maintain the atmosphere of a major academic campus - a Brand new HSE Day 2020 took place on 10 September. The festival’s main stage area was called ‘HSE PRO Future’—because, after all, the future is important for any university. Ten promises for the next 10 years were made by HSE on its most important day. HSE students and faculty members addressed opportunities for international students at the ‘HSE International stage’.

We are open to your feedback on the topics to address in the future HSE University Newsletters and to receiving more news from you. We are glad to receive your partner’ newsletters, which we used to study with the utmost attention and bring them to the attention of HSE University’s community through the International Partnerships website.

We strongly believe that each of our partnerships gives us valuable opportunities and enriches our knowledge, and look forward to further development of our cooperation.

Yours sincerely,

Ivan Prostakov

Vice-Rector for International Relations

Weeping Men. Why misandry flourishes in Russian society

Although Russia has traditionally been a patriarchal society, misandry—the sharp criticism of men, or ‘reverse sexism’—is on the rise. Women accuse men of every possible sin, from acting aggressively to being too passive at work and home, and from narcissism to general indifference. Men are at the centre of numerous high-profile harassment scandals. Although it is impossible to ignore the problem, it would be equally wrong to blame all the world’s problems exclusively on men. In a pilot study, HSE University researchers studied misandry in the women of two different generations.
