HSE Strengthens Partnerships with Italian Universities
On 19-23 February 2018 the HSE delegation headed by HSE Rector Yaroslav Kuzminov made a grand tour in Italy visiting 7 partner universities in the North of Italy and meeting around 100 colleagues. HSE delegation members were honored to take part in the Ceremony dedicated to 150th Anniversary of Ca' Foscari University of Venice  and official opening of the Academic Year 2017/2018 that was attended by Ca Foscari faculty staff and students, leaders of other local institutions and by the President of the Italian Republic Sergio Mattarella. Within the opening the HSE Rector took part in the academic procession together with Ca Foscari Rector Professor Michele Bugliesi and other 20 participants wearing their universities mantles including leaders of HSE partner universities such as Provost of University College London Professor Arthur, President of Korea University Professor Yeom, Rector of University of Naples Federico II Professor Manfredi, Rector of University of Bergamo Professor Pellegrini Morzenti and others.
While visiting the University of Padova  the Rectors of University of Padova and HSE exchanged information on new programs and study possibilities for enhancing student and research mobility and signed a Memorandum of Understanding together with 4 Addenda opening doors for students and staff exchange in the fields of Economics (with HSE in Moscow, Saint Petersburg and Perm) and Mathematics and Computer Science (with Moscow campus). To support future student and staff mobilities with HSE in Economics and Management the University of Padova applied for an Erasmus+ KA107 Call 2017, and we are looking forward to getting the result soon. Meanwhile Vladlen Timorin, Dean of HSE Faculty of Mathematics, and Sergei Obiedkov, Deputy Dean for Research and International Relations at HSE Faculty of Computer Science, took part in a scientific conference in honor of Tullio Levi-Civita organized by the University of Padova and dedicated to outstanding works of the Italian mathematician. The University of Padova expressed their deep interest in cooperation with HSE as a promising strategic partner in Russia.
The delegation also visited the University of Bologna , a good long-term partner of HSE since 2009. Notably, 63 Italian students and 76 HSE students have participated in the student exchange programme under the university-wide agreement. The meeting conversation addressed new prospective areas of cooperation including enhancing double degree programs in political science and economics and expanding institutional cooperation to mathematics.
Later the HSE delegation represented by Vice-Rector Ivan Prostakov, Director of HSE in Saint Petersburg Sergei Kadochnikov, and Manager of Office for International Cooperation Alyona Sutormina travelled North to visit HSE’s partners in Milan –University of Milan, Polytechnic University of Milan, Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, and Giangiacomo Feltrinelli Foundation.
The Polytechnic University of Milan  is the most prestigious technical university in Italy, besides of Engineering it focuses on Architecture, Design and Business Education. The main part of the meetings was hosted by the School of Management and attracted faculty and administrative staff members representing different PoliMi areas – they all were very much interested in developing cooperation with HSE and expressed their specific proposals. In particular, HSE master’s students of Vysokovsky Graduate School of Urbanism were invited to take part in the Summer School in Urban Planning organized by PoliMi on Como Lake in late August 2018. There is also an opportunity for the HSE students studying MA Programme in Governance of Science, Technology and Innovation to take part in the semester abroad scheme with PoliMi. And HSE delegation members introduced PoliMi colleagues to appropriate short-term and full-degree programmes offered by HSE to international students.
At the University of Milan  summer school issues, Russian Studies short term programmes, potential cooperation with Neurolinguistics Laboratory, and system of fellowships provided for UniMi master students going abroad were discussed.
The representatives of Catholic University of the Sacred Heart  expressed their deep interest in developing cooperation with HSE considering it as a strategic partner in Russia The partners expressed their readiness to invest their energy and resources in this cooperation and outlined the areas of primary interest including developing double degree programs in Finance and Big Data together with exploring possibility to launch a new Specialized Master’s programme in Russian Studies & Doing Business in Russia.
The Fondazione Giangiacomo Feltrinelli partners confirmed their intention in developing joint research projects with HSE School of History and would be pleased to take part in HSE’s international events.
The grand tour to Italian partner universities has become a great opportunity for exchanging universities news and sharing university strategies along with practical information and renewing contacts. It resulted in establishing institutional partnership and signing agreements and cooperation and student exchange with the University of Padova thus opening new destination for academic mobility. New areas and academic and research projects were identified with all the universities visited, which will be included in the partnership implementation plans to be assembled by the HSE Office for International Cooperation together with HSE colleagues and Italian partners.
 HSE cooperates with Ca Foscari University in Venice since 2012. As for now 16 students from Ca Foscari are on the exchange at HSE, and 18 HSE students study in Venice.
 University of Padova is one of the “BIG 5” large-scale classical Italian universities (among La Sapienza, University of Bologna, University of Milan, and University of Turin); University of Padova has the biggest number of the departments granted with the Excellence status by the Government.
 There is a student exchange programme with University of Bologna for all HSE faculties and levels of education as well as a double degree programme in political science. 7 HSE students have already obtained two degrees from HSE and Bologna, 2 HSE students will laureate in 2018.
 Polytechnic University of Milan in Rankings: QS 170, THE 301-350; Subjects: QS 7 (Art and Design), 14 (Architecture), 49 (Computer Science), 51-100 (Business and Management Studies). There is a student exchange programme between MIEM HSE and Polimi School of Industrial and Information Engineering.
 There is a student and staff exchange with HSE School of Linguistics. This year HSE hosts 2 interns from UniMi studying Russian.
 Catholic University Sacro Cuore, Milan is the largest private university in Europe, has main campus in Milan and other campuses in Rome, Brescia, Piacenza and Cremona. Positions in Ranking: QS 481-490, THE 501-600; Subjects: QS 51-100 (Law), 101-150 (Economics and Econometrics), 169 (Social Sciences and Management). There is a student exchange programme with HSE Faculty of Economic Sciences, School of Linguistics, School of Philology, and School of Foreign Languages.
