Course Syllabus

Abstract

Master ‘s research seminar is a compulsory part of the curriculum of the ICEF master’s programme “Financial Economics”. The main goals of the seminar is to teach students research techniques used in modern economics and finance, to familiarize them with the research agenda of ICEF faculty as well as the research methodology they employ , and help students to develop their research and presentation skills. The seminar is attended by both MSc student cohorts. It is conducted in English.

  • To acquaint students with contemporary research topics, in particular those developed by their potential supervisors
  • To expose them to up-to-date research techniques in economics and finance
  • To motivate students towards an early start on their research projects
  • To develop students’ academic writing skills
  • To develop their presentation skills and abilities to participate in academic discussions

Course Contents

Course Contents

  • Presentations of research supervisors.
    Research supervisors present potential MSc Thesis topics, their own research agenda and research methodology to the incoming MSs 1st year students (and 2nd year students who wish to change their topic/supervisor). Attendance is mandatory for MSc 1st year.
  • Introduction into research work
    Research question and structuring of the paper, organization of work, working with data sources, software, etc. Series of introductory lectures for the 1st year students.
  • Thematic and Reading group meetings
    2nd and 1st year students present their plan of research and discuss it under the guidance of ICEF full-time and part-time teachers.
  • Bloomberg terminal training session
  • Spring mini research conference
Assessment Elements

Assessment Elements

  • non-blocking Presentation
    Students who missed presentation due to a valid reason are assigned an additional date to make it.
  • non-blocking Attendance
    To get maximal grade for attendance a student should attend at least 2 thematic group meetings (excluding meetings where he presents and debates). In case there are no sufficient number of meetings of particular theme, a student should attend meetings of different themes
  • non-blocking Participation in seminar discussions
  • non-blocking Work as an assigned discussant
  • non-blocking Bloomberg terminal training session

  • Interim assessment (1 semester)
    0.1 * Work as an assigned discussant + 0.2 * Attendance + 0.1 * Participation in seminar discussions + 0.6 * Presentation
  • Interim assessment (2 semester)
    0.15 * Attendance + 0.05 * Bloomberg terminal training session + 0.5 * Interim assessment (1 semester) + 0.3 * Presentation
