Abstract

In modern news production it is important to know the all the things connected with the workflow of the newsroom and the way journalists editors, producers operate as a single entity. The course offers students modern ways in the newsroom strategy - from setting up the newsroom to the management in content creation. The scope of knowledge represents the basic facts about newsroom management techniques, building up the news agenda for the media.

Learning Objectives

  • The students will learn the structure of the newsroom management, the approach to get the basic idea on how the newsroom operates both on TV and in the news agency. Special attention will be paid to the ways the news can be organized on the newscasts and newswires.

Course Contents

  • What should we know about newsroom management?
    Areas of newsroom strategies. What do the consumers want from the news markets? Modes of newsroom operation.
  • Newsgathering strategies in the newsrooms
    Sources for the news. Agencies, press releases, personal contacts, witnesses, calendars. Verification strategy and tactics in the newsroom management
  • Agenda setting
    Filling up the story. Narrative and visual strategy. Development for the coverage of the story from the news agenda.
  • News writing strategies
    Types of text elements in the news management: newsflash, news alert, wrapup, reports, slugs, headlines, etc.
  • Newscast management
    Types of the news bulletins. Designing the rundown elements. Writing to puctures
  • Changing world of multimedia
    Multimedia planning. Choice of platforms. Panning various multimedia activities and media projects.
  • Hard and soft skill management: how to blend them together
    Storytelling line. Selection facts, figures and softwate. Production tips for multimedia projects.
  • Breaking news management
    How to change the newsroom coverage when the urgent news comes in. Live coverage in the news management. Elements for the breaking news rundown.
