Abstract

The course is dedicated to Internet development in 15 countries formed after the collapse of the USSR in 1991. It observes general transformations of national media systems and covers such aspects as national Internet histories, dynamics and measurement of Internet audiences, online regulation and political aspects of Internet development, online and Internet-dependent markets, etc. If the Soviet Union created a unified media system, which was completely controlled by the state and the Communist Party, the directions and trends of media development in the post-Soviet period, including the Internet, turned out to be very different and peculiar. Special attention will be paid to the field of online media analysis. Students will learn the main directions of Post-Soviet Internet research, the current state of main scientific discussions, and the methods of analysis used.
