Aleena Khan, from Pakistan, is currently pursuing a master's in Comparative Social Research at HSE University, Moscow. Despite studying online in the first semester, she already feels part of the HSE student community. In her interview, Aleena talks about the admissions process, her favourite courses, and her general impressions.

Из почти 12 млн россиян, имеющих инвалидность, официально трудоустроены менее 14%. Найти достойную работу и получить качественное образование людям с ограниченными возможностями очень сложно. Многочисленные программы господдержки пока не смогли полностью изменить дискриминационное отношение к ним. Об этом эксперты говорили на международном онлайн-семинаре, который прошел в ВШЭ. На мероприятии было также представлено исследование Всемирного банка «Анализ барьеров и возможностей для участия людей с инвалидностью на рынке труда в РФ».

Проект «Люди с ментальной инвалидностью в процессе трудоустройства: стратегии, барьеры и субъективные смыслы участия» подготовлен Кристианом Фрёлихом (руководитель), Дарьей Присяжнюк, Марией Ивановой и Анной Синельниковой.   

Рабочая группа НЦМУ по инклюзии на рабочих местах и управлению многообразием организовала собственную панель на 10-м Всемирном конгрессе Международного совета по изучению Центральной и Восточной Европы.

The fourth issue of 2020 presents three interviews on the digital university concept and introduces new tenure faculty.

Центральное агентство по оценке и аккредитации (ZEvA) признало образовательные программы «Социология» и «Сравнительные социальные исследования» соответствующими международным стандартам качества образования. Обе программы аккредитованы на шесть лет без дополнительных условий.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, HSE University, as well as other universities around the world, has had to  quickly transition to online learning. How have students and instructors adapted to distance learning? What are the challenges that the university has faced?  How have assessment mechanisms changed?  HSE administrators and instructors answer these questions for the HSE News Service.

Inspired by her exchange experience in Moscow during her undergraduate studies, French student Marion Jacquart decided to do her Master’s at the School for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences in Paris because it has a double degree agreement with HSE University. As she finishes her programme in Comparative Social Research in Moscow, where she has been based for the last year doing research for her Master’s thesis on feminism, she shared her experience and impressions with the HSE News Service.

On March 25-29, the 'Doing Business in Russia' Programme began its 2018-2019 Spring Semester on HSE's Moscow campus.

Это была первая встреча подобного рода.

30 ноября и 1 декабря в Санкт-Петербурге состоялся совместный научно-методический семинар двух департаментов социологии НИУ ВШЭ — московского (в составе факультета социльных наук) и петербургского (в составе Санкт-Петербургской школы социальных наук и востоковедения). Это была первая встреча подобного рода.

НИУ ВШЭ и французская Высшая школа социальных наук (EHESS) подписали соглашение о двойных дипломах в рамках магистерской программы «Сравнительные социальные исследования». Это уже второй трек двойных дипломов, доступный студентам программы. Ранее в этом году было подписано соглашение со Свободным университетом Берлина.

After the conference is over it’s time to reflect on what this year has brought to plan for the participation in the next year’s event, and The HSE Look talked to several internationally recruited HSE faculty members about what they value most about participating in the April Conference and what topics and discussions they found most interesting this year.

If you are interested in attending a conference at HSE, there is always something going on. In fact, one of the University’s conferences aimed at young researchers is quite special, as it held neither in Russian nor in English, but in German. Less than half a month apart from HSE’s April Conference, the international conference Welt und Wissenschaft (‘World and Science’) was held for the 4^th time. The HSE Looktalked to one of the organizers, Yulia Pasko, Associate Professor of the Department of German Language, about how they involve students and faculty in the development of this tight-knit academic community.

In this issue of The HSE Look, we would like to focus on three of the many seminar series which are held at HSE, and we are glad to present the interview with Christian Fröhlich, Assistant Professor at the School of Sociology, about the seminar series in Sociology at HSE Moscow.

Высшая школа экономики подписала соглашение о программе двух дипломов со Свободным университетом Берлина (Германия). Соглашение распространяется на магистерскую программу «Сравнительные социальные исследования», ее партнером с немецкой стороны станет программа East European Studies.

On October 19, the HSE School of Sociology hosted Dr. Kerstin Jacobsson, Professor of Sociology at the University of Gothenburg (Sweden), for a seminar entitled ‘Emotions and Morality in a neo-Durkheimian Perspective on Social Movements’. Held as part of the International Sociology Seminar Series, Dr. Jacobsson’s talk was based on the book Animal Rights Activism: A Moral-Sociological Perspective on Social Movements (co-authored with Jonas Lindblom), which develops a novel theoretical perspective on social movements. Following her lecture, she spoke with the HSE News Service about some of the key findings in her research on social movements, including as they relate to the post-Soviet space.

On September 22 'Living and Working in Russia' workshop welcomed new international faculty members to HSE.

Christian Fröhlich is Assistant Professor at the School of Sociology who has been at HSE since 2014. He also supervises an English-taught Master’s Programme ‘Comparative Social Research’. Christian Fröhlich has talked to HSE University bulletin, The HSE Look, about programme design, partnerships, and lessons learned from running the programme.

On March 14, 2017, at 6:00 pm Moscow time, the HSE Faculty of Social Sciences will hold its first webinar for prospective international Master’s students. During the webinar, academic supervisors and leading lecturers will cover HSE’s English-taught Master’s programmes in political science, sociology and public administration.

Adapting to a new university environment can be a difficult process, especially with such a thing as teaching classes, where not only teacher’s own abilities but also formal requirements and the academic culture of the institution come into play. In previous issues of The HSE Look (October 2015, May 2014, September 2013) we covered different aspects of teaching at HSE, such as the module system, assessment regulations, syllabus design, finding teaching assistants and using electronic Learning Management System.

Monika Wohlrab-Sahr, Professor of Cultural Sociology at the University of Leipzig in Germany, began her involvement with HSE when she started working with two young scholars – Christian Fröhlich, an Assistant Professor at HSE and a former PhD student of hers, and Rafael Mrowczynski, who has served as a DAAD-lecturer at HSE. Ahead of her upcoming visit to Moscow, where she will present her work on ‘Multiple Secularities’ and give a seminar on Qualitative Methods, Professor Wohlrab-Sahr spoke with the HSE news service about her work, her academic interests, and her views on the key attributes researchers need today.

Сотрудники кафедры приняли участие в конференции Международного сообщества исследователей третьего сектора (International Society for Third Sector Research – ISTR) в Стокгольме. ISTR с 1992 года содействует продвижению исследований гражданского общества, некоммерческого сектора и филантропии, объединяя ученых и практиков различных дисциплин из 80 стран. В этом году состоялась двенадцатая конференция ISTR на тему «Третий сектор в период трансформации: отчетность, прозрачность и социальная инклюзия».

Этим летом на магистерской программе «Сравнительные социальные исследования» состоялся первый выпуск. Академический руководитель программы Кристиан Фрёлих и ее выпускники рассказали новостной службе ВШЭ о том, что программа предлагает абитуриентам и в чем ее особенности.

Master’s programme in Comparative Social Research was launched in 2014 and has been rapidly developing since. Its Academic Supervisor Christian Fröhlich talks about what the programme offers the applicants and what makes it unique.

On January 31st – February 3^rd 2016, the Winter School of the Faculty of Social Sciences was held at the ‘Voronovo’ Learning Centre, HSE. During the event, potential master’s students took part in master classes, business cases and meetings with students and graduates of the faculty’s educational programmes.

Christian Frohlich has been a Research Fellow at the Centre for Studies of Civil Society and Non-Profit Sector since 2014. This year he is being fast tracked for tenure in the HSE Faculty of Social Sciences in the School of Sociology. Dr Frohlich has a DPhil in Sociology from Leipzig University, Germany. He spoke to HSE English News about his research into civic activism in Russia and about why he likes living and working in Moscow.
