Факторы, влияющие на разрешение неоднозначности сфер действия

2018–2019

The project aims at conducting a corpus study of the factors involved in disambiguating potential scope ambiguities that arise due to the interaction of active semantic operators, such as negation, quantifiers, and adverbials within an utterance. Thus, phrases like "I don’t want talk to all these people" can alternatively mean ‘I don’t want to talk to any of these people’ or ‘I don’t want to talk to some of these people’, depending on the scope assignment of negation and the quantifier "all". Scope ambiguity is a wide-spread phenomenon, whose semantic and syntactic mechanisms are fairly well researched in linguistics and form an essential part of any course on theoretical semantics. However, its actual functioning in language usage remains for the most part obscure, as the majority of studies on semantic and syntactic scope operate with artificially constructed phrases rather than with natural spoken and written language data.
At the same time, while potentially ambiguous scope readings are not infrequent in actual usage, in natural communication and in other natural linguistic tasks, such as reading, we rarely experience difficulties in assigning correct scope to operators in the contexts which in principle allow for their ambiguity. For example, the phrase "Unfortunately, he got only a B- on the test because he couldn’t solve all the problems" would more likely be interpreted as ‘He solved part of the problems’, with negation scoping over the universal quantifier, whereas the phrase "I don’t want to listen to all these false allegations" would rather be interpreted as ‘I want to listen to none of these false allegations’, with the universal quantifier outside the scope of negation.
The project aims at determining the mechanisms of scope disambiguation that allow language users, in particular, readers of texts,  to infer the correct reading in each case of potential ambiguity. The study employs corpus methods to analyze the actual usage of negation and universal quantifier on a representative sample of corpus data in order to discover differences in the frequency distribution of different scope readings and their underlying causes, as well as formulate “favorite” indicative contexts for each scope interpretation.
