Имманентное и трансцендентное в философии религии немецкого идеализма, 1781-1806

2019

This project takes its starting point from the fact that the contemporary employment of the conceptual pair “immanence” and “transcendence” – so influential for how we have come to think about religion and divinity but also metaphysics more generally – was importantly taking shape within, and in critical response to, Kantian and post-Kantian Idealist philosophies. In light of that, the proposed project aims to reconstruct the way (and the extent to which) Kant, Early German Idealism, and the central philosophical-religious controversies surrounding them conceptualized the relation between divinity and the world, as well as between religion and philosophy, along the immanent-transcendent spectrum and how that contributed to the formation of this binary. The project focuses on the material of what may be called pre-Hegelian German Idealism (i.e., preceding the 1807 Phenomenology of Spirit), during which the immanent-transcendent binary was already being forged but was not yet established in its contemporary usage. This phase in the emergence of this pair of concepts is formative, and yet, despite German Idealism’s prominence, it still remains underexplored from this specific angle. To rectify that, the project will, first, closely examine the configurations of transcendence and immanence in pre-Hegelian German Idealism and, in parallel to that, in its philosophical-religious critiques during that period; and secondly, trace how post-Kantian German Idealism, in its tendency towards monism, sought to escape this binary – and how this very tendency was, simplistically but also influentially, reduced by its critics to an indication of German Idealism’s “immanent” orientation, which ultimately served to reinforce the binary itself. To that end, the project will undertake a detailed analysis of the relationship between God and the world, as well as religion and philosophy, in pre-Hegelian German Idealism, which will relate it to the uses (endorsements or dismissals) of the terms “immanence” and “transcendence” by the German Idealists and their critics. Thereby, the project will reconstruct a crucial phase in the formation of one of the most influential binaries in philosophy of religion, as well as shed new light on the dynamics of German Idealism, internal but also vis-à-vis its philosophical-religious critique, contributing to the ongoing reconsideration of the philosophical trajectory and importance of Early German Idealism. The project will result in at least two articles on this topic by the applicant, one in a leading Russian and another in a top international peer-reviewed journal, and will lay the groundwork for a monograph on this topic by the applicant.
