This autumn, six HSE University students helped develop the HSE University portal, including the Life in Moscow website. All of them study at the School of Foreign Languages in Moscow. At the end of their internship, we asked the participants to share some of their favourite places to spend leisure time, do sports, and have fun in the wintry Russian capital. Below, Diana and Mary talk about a secret photo booth and invite everyone to attend a free Christmas play performed in English.

Mary Gureeva

My name is Mary. I am an HSE bachelor’s student of ‘Foreign Languages and Intercultural Communication.’

It was a real pleasure to write for the website this autumn. Now, real winter is coming and everyone is looking for cool places to feel the atmosphere of the upcoming Christmas holidays. I want to recommend one such place.

The Library for Foreign Literature is a perfect place for those who want to spend their winter evenings reading and learning foreign languages

Moreover, this winter the library invites language learners and book worms to attend its Christmas festival. Guests will be able to watch performances in different languages and listen to fantastic lectures.

What’s more, visitors will have an opportunity to watch Not So Little Women, a play written, staged, and performed in English by HSE SOFL students. This cosy and winter-like event inspired by Louisa May Alcott’s famous novel will put everyone in the holiday spirit. The event is free to attend but visitors must register in advance.

Place: Margarita Rudomino All-Russia State Library for Foreign Literature

Date: December 22

Time: 3:30 pm–6:30 pm

Diana Kulyaba

My name is Diana and the best thing about Moscow for me is that there are plenty of opportunities to meet up with my friends!

Last week, we went to Park Kultury metro station and walked along the Prechistenskaya Embankment, admiring the view of historic buildings along the river. Then we crossed the bridge to Krasny Oktyabr, a former chocolate factory that is now an art cluster and a hub of cafés, creative spaces, and stores.

There, we found a photo booth named Memopix. My friends and I squeezed into the booth together and took photos: four in a row! We changed poses and facial expressions and had a lot of fun doing it. Then, two strips of candid black-and-white photos were printed, and we decided to go again.

It costs 200 roubles to take four pictures and receive two printed strips of them, as well as an electronic version

Then, we headed to a place called Øliv Pizza, also located right there in Krasny Oktyabr. The pizza tasted like heaven. So, if you decide to take the same route, you will not go hungry!

I love that the photos we took depicted us as we are now: young, still quite carefree, always together, and laughing. So, if you would also like to preserve memories of your time with friends in Moscow and capture the moment, I highly recommend visiting Krasny Oktyabr and the Memopix photo booth!
