In the article, the events of the pogrom in Tomsk and the following judicial trial are presented through the role of one of the rioters, the cabby I.S. Bogun, as well as several other characters. The bloodshed was caused by the increased activity of revolutionaries, including lawyers, and their clash with the urban lower classes, who recognized a call to stand up for autocracy in the Manifesto of October 17, 1905. Loyal feelings brought the ignorant masses to the streets, but the surge of this kind of patriotism, capable of increasing political activity and at that moment a lifesaver for tsarism, was accompanied by a sharp criminalization of urban life. The emperor’s bet on a utilitarianly understood patriotism, the pressure of the authorities on justice after the pogrom, and, as it might seem, the emperor’s support of crime by pardoning convicted rioters, were not ways in which the monarchy could ensure a sustainable future for itself.
