Olessia (Elena) Koltsova is a social scienist committed to interdisciplinary research in the sphere of computational communication science. As the director of Laboratory for Social and Cognitive Informatics (formerly – Laboratory for Internet Studies), she leads various collective projects in the sphere of internet and society, as well as in methods of large-scale automatic internet data analysis for social science. In recent years, she has published on online community structure, cognitive and psychological limits to online communication, ethnicity-targeted speech detection, user content topical composition and sentiment, and other topics. She is also the author of News Media and Power in Russia, Routledge, 2006.

SCILA researchers presented two papers at the 9th conference on Artificial Intelligence and Natural Language (AINL 2020), which took place from 7 to 9 October 2020.
Since June 22, 2020, Professor Paolo Rosso has officially taken the responsibilities of SCILA’s academic supervisor. Paolo Rosso is a full professor at the department of Information Systems and Computation of Polytechnical university of Valencia, Spain, where he also heads Natural Language Engineering research group within Pattern Recognition and Human Language Technologies Research Centre (PRHLT).
On October 23-25 the Laboratory for Internet Studies took part in Aleksanteri Conference in Helsinki.
On October 15, the head of the Internet Studies Lab Olessia Koltsova participated in the conference “Digital Media Research Methods: Theoretical and Practical Aspects”, which was held in the young and rapidly developing Nazarbayev University (Kazakhstan, Nur-Sultan).
The HSE Internet Studies Lab has got an opportunity to study political fake news for the period of three years, and the project ‘Modern Models of Poetics: a Reconstructive Approach’ received a two-year extension of funding.
LINIS team took part in VI International Conference on Comparative Media Studies in Today’s World, which held on 17-19 April at High School of Journalism and Media Communication SPbU.
Olessia Koltsova took a part in annual international conference of AOiR 2017, which took place in Tartu (Estonia) from October 18-21, 2017.
LINIS staff took a part in 22nd Annual CyberPsychology, CyberTherapy & Social Networking Conference (CyPsy22), which was held on June 26-28 in the University of Wolverhampton (UK).
The Second International Conference “Digital Transformation & Global Society” (DTGS’17) was held between 21 and 23 June, 2017, to address various issues of information society development. The conference was co-organized by the National Research University Higher School of Economics (St. Petersburg) and the ITMO University.
