Professor's Biography

I am professor Anastasia Tumanova, Doctor of History and Doctor of Law, Professor of the Theory and Comparative Law Department and the Leading Scientific Researcher in the National Research University “Higher School of Economics”, Moscow, Russian Federation.

The sphere of my scientific interests is the history of state and law, the legal thought, human rights and freedoms in Late Imperial Russia.

I was born in 1971, in Tambov (Russian Federation).

After finishing English School in 1988 I entered the Tambov State University and finished it in 1993. Then I leant the history of voluntary associations in Voronezh State University (1993–1996), where I defended the Candidate dissertation. I was a teacher of faculty in Tambov State University from 1996 to 2008, from 2005 to 2008 I was the chair of the History of State and Law Department.

I received my doctor`s decrees in Moscow, at the Moscow State Regional University and at the Academy of Management of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. My studies focus on the history of civil society and civil rights in late imperial Russia. My scientific researchers were supported by different foundations such as American Council of Learned Societies (USA, Vashington), Gerda Henkel Stiftung (Germany), “Close Society” Fund (Soros Fund) and others.

In 2004 I defended the dissertation about the legal status of voluntary association in Russian Empire in the beginning of the 20-th century, when freedom of unions and assemblies was adopted, and became the Doctor of Law. From 2008 I am – Professor of the Theory and Comparative Law Department in the National Research University “Higher School of Economics”, Moscow. I am teaching the History of Russian State and Law, the History of Russian Legal Thought, the Theory and History of Civil Society. I am supervising master’s program “History, Theory and Philosophy of Law”. I am the Deputy Editor-in-Chief of science magazine “Civil Society in Russia and Abroad”, the member of editorial broad of the science magazines: “History of State and Law”, “Questions in Jurisprudence” and the member of editorial council of the publishing house ‘New Chronograph”. Also I am the expert of Russian Humanitarian Science Foundation and Russian Foundation of Fundamental Research (Moscow, Russian Federation).

Under my supervision were defended 10 candidate dissertations including in History of State and Law and History of Legal Thought.

I have 210 publications, among them are 7 books. The main monographs are:
