XVI April International Conference on ‘ Modernising the Economy and Society ’

Event ended

On 7-10 April, 2015 the HSE will host the XVI April conference on economic and social development with participation from the World Bank. This year the conference programme committee is chaired by the HSE’s Academic Supervisor, Professor Evgeny Yasin. Senior officials from the Russian government and presidential administration, representatives of the World Bank and OECD, Russian and foreign business leaders and academics are invited to speak at the plenary sessions and special roundtable discussions.

Conference Themes:

  • Institutions and economic development
  • Reforms: reasons for successes and failures
  • Global world: integration or disintegration?
  • The demand for rights: factors and forces at work

There will be plenary sessions, honorary lectures, workshops and roundtable discussions dedicated to the conference themes.

For several days following the plenary sessions academics will present their papers and experts will run roundtable discussions on current problems of economic development.

You can read more about the general topics for discussion on the conference website.

You don’t have to limit yourself to these topics when submitting papers but the committee will give priority to submissions related to the conference themes indicated on the site.

Papers must contain the results of original academic research conducted using modern methods.

Presentations at sessions are allocated 15 - 20 minutes.  Speakers at the expert roundtable discussions are limited to 5-7 minutes.

The programme for workshops and roundtable discussions will be determined taking into account the papers submitted.

The conference will have two working languages, Russian and English. Simultaneous translation will be provided in plenary sessions and most workshops.

Applications to present a paper from individual speakers should be sent by email through the website between 9 September and 11 November 2014.

Each participant will have a personal account for the registration process which will be used for communications with the conference organisers.

Applications must include an extensive summary of the proposed lecture, formatted in Word or RTF of 1 - 3 typed pages with 1.5 line spacing (up to 7,000 characters). The summary should explain the subject, show the extent to which the problem is investigated, describe the research data (is it theoretical or empirical, what is the informational basis), and state the basic results obtained. If the summary does not reflect the main arguments of the lecture, or is less than a page long the application will not be considered.

A group of authors of individual applications registered online before 11 November 2014 can inform the programme committee if they wish to present their papers in one session. A message to this effect should be sent to interconf@hse.ru with the names of the session, the authors and the subjects of their papers (not more than 3 or 4, already registered as individual applications) and the full name and contact details (phone and email) of the proposed leader of the session.

You can present one individual and no more than two co-authored papers at the conference.

Each session should have no more than two speakers from one organisation. Sessions will last 1 hour and 30 minutes. Proposals for the structure of a session can be considered by the committee during the process of selecting submissions and devising the conference programme.

The committee will decide which papers to include in the programme by 20 January 2015 and they will publish a preliminary version of the conference programme. Those with papers listed in the preliminary programme must confirm their participation using their personal account by 3 February 2015. If you fail to provide confirmation, your paper will be removed from the programme.

If your application is accepted for the conference you must provide a full version of your paper to put on the conference website by 5 March 2015. After the conference the HSE will publish an electronic version of collected papers. If you want your paper to be included in the collection you must present a final version of up to 20,000 characters (including spaces formatted in Word, RTF) by 20 May 2015.

The editorial board will decide which papers to publish based on the results of a peer review. Only papers from the conference will be considered.

Papers from the conference programme after additional referencing and editorial consideration can be accepted for publication in Russian academic journals (on economics, management, sociology, politics, governance, education, Russia), whose representatives are invited to be part of the conference programme committee.

Participants from CIS countries and Eastern Europe could be eligible for a grant from World Bank Moscow to pay their expenses for coming to the conference. Applications for a grant must be sent before 10 February 2015 by email to interconf@hse.ru

A series of seminars for people writing graduate dissertations and doctoral theses will be organised in the framework of the conference (with expenses paid for selected speakers). Information about conditions for taking part will be available on the conference site from 11 September 2014. Applications to attend the conference without presenting a paper will be accepted online between 12 November 2014 and 20 March 2015 at the website.

Information about how to pay the registration fee is available on the conference website.
