Seminar with Robert Johnson on ‘ Facebook: how we scaled to 500 000 000 users ’
On October 22nd the next session of the ‘E-Business: Research, Development, Education’ seminar will take place at the HSE. The event has been organized by the HSE Faculty of Business Informatics Department of Innovation and Business in Information Technologies. Robert Johnson will speak on ‘Facebook: how we scaled to 500 000 000 users’.
About the speaker:
Robert (Bobby) Johnson is Director of Engineering at Facebook, where he leads the software development efforts to cost-effectively scale Facebook's infrastructure and optimize performance for its many millions of users. During his time with the company, the number of users has expanded by more than fiftyfold and Facebook now handles billions of page views a day. Bobby was previously at ActiveVideo Networks, where he led the distributed systems and set-top software development teams. He has worked in a wide variety of engineering roles, from robotics to embedded systems to Web software. He received a B.S. in Engineering and Applied Science from Caltech.
Abstract:
In just six years Facebook has gone from an idea in a dorm room to the most popular social site in the world, with over 500 million active members. This incredible growth has led to many technical challenges. Some of the numbers we deal with are: 100 billion hits per day, 50 billion photos stored, and a cache that holds 2 trillion objects and handles hundreds of millions of requests a second.
Robert Johnson: ‘I'll be talking about the technology required to run the site at this massive scale, including specific technologies we've developed, some of the general principles we apply to scaling problems, and some of the lessons learned along the way. I'll also be talking about out latest scaling challenge - bringing social context to the entire web with Facebook platform’.
