Course Syllabus
Abstract
Southeast Asia is playing a special role in today's world because of its strategic geopolitical location, state-centred economic development, dynamic regional cooperation, and large Muslim population. To help students better understand the dynamics of this important region, this course explores the historical evolution and the recent development of international relations in Southeast Asia.
Learning Objectives
- Examine the historical legacies of international relations in Southeast Asia during the early historical, colonial, and cold war periods
- Gain understanding of contemporary challenges facing Southeast Asia
Expected Learning Outcomes
- Student will be able to analyze the economic development of Southeast Asian countries
- Student will be able to discuss the development of Southeast Asia during the Cold War
- Student will be able to discuss the issues regarding human rights and security in Southeast Asia
- Student will be able to give a comprehensive overview of ASEAN structure, history and reasons for its creation
- Student will be able to give a comprehensive overview of nationalist movements in Southeast Asia
- Student will be able to give a comprehensive overview of the main stages of Western colonialism in Southeast Asia
