Ethical Evaluation of Research

Are you planning to publish the results of your research in a foreign journal?

Many foreign journals require the confirmation that the research project conforms to ethical standards. You can get this confirmation at the HSE Committee on Interuniversity Surveys and Ethical Assessment of Empirical Research on a voluntary basis. Receiving confirmation that the research project confirms to ethical standards includes the following steps:

  1. The project supervisor sends a signed application.

  2. The Committee considers the application within 45 days and makes one of four decisions:

    A. The empirical research project conforms entirely to ethical standards, and can be implemented in its current form.

    B. The empirical research project conforms in general to ethical standards, and can be implemented after a series of changes and corrections, which are minor from the ethical point of view.

    C. The empirical research project doesn’t fully conform to ethical standards. It can be implemented after revision considering comments and recommendations, followed by the Committee’s reconsideration.

    D. The empirical research project doesn’t conform to ethical standards, and can’t be approved for implementing.

  3. If the Committee decides that the research project doesn’t fully conform to ethical standards (C), or the design of the research was changed after submitting the application and getting approval, an ethical evaluation of the project is repeated. The reconsideration procedure takes 10 days.

  4. The final decision of the conformity of a research project to ethical standards in Russian and English is signed by the Committee Chairman, and is sent to the applicant by email within two working days. A written record of the decision can be obtained from the Secretary.
