HSE Day in Gorky Park: Information for the HSE's International Colleagues and Friends

On Tuesday, September 10, 2013, HSE Day will take place for the second time in Moscow's Gorky Park. The celebration is open to students, staff, and alumni of the University as well as all Moscow residents.

Event History

The idea to gather all of the HSE’s friends and admirers in one spot came about last year when the HSE was preparing to celebrate its 20th anniversary. It was obvious to the celebration’s organizers that none of the city’s entertainment venues would be able to accommodate the expected throngs of current and former students and colleagues and all their friends and families, and that an open-air gathering would be needed. HSE graduates had been gathering in Gorky Park’s latticework gazebo for several years already; so, in September 2012, the gathering was expanded to include all those with a connection to the HSE and to Muscovites in general. It’s hoped that this celebration will be an annual tradition.

Event Activities

What awaits HSE Day guests on the 10th of September? The Park will be divided into several zones: an intellectual zone, a sports and entertainment zone, and a zone featuring the University itself. Three lectures will be going on simultaneously as a way of marking the end of the HSE’s summer season of lectures in Gorky Park. Sports enthusiasts will have plenty of opportunities to enjoy playing volleyball, Frisbee, rodeo-style bull riding, and rock climbing. Those who enjoy dancing, trying their luck at target practice, playing “Mafia,” or doing craftwork will find places to do so. And, just like last year, all of the HSE’s faculties and departments will have stands set up around the central fountain.

For first-year students, the HSE Cultural Centre’s creative team will present a musical based on The Town Musicians of Bremen, with famous artists representing a variety of musical styles—from beatbox to avant-garde rock—in attendance. Also, in honor of the 10th anniversary of the HSE’s Professorial Circles, the group 1/2 Orchestra will give a concert. And, in the evening, when they have tired of wandering and playing in the Park and listening to lectures, everyone is invited to the Stas Namin Green Theatre to enjoy a performance by the Night Snipers. HSE Day will conclude with a display of fireworks.

Special Information for International Colleagues and Friends

As part of the festivities, a tour conducted in English will be available for the HSE's international staff from 12:00 to 2:00 pm. Then, from 3:00 to 7:00 pm, prominent guests of the HSE will speak on different topics at the outdoor lecture hall located near the central fountain. Following the sightseeing tour, the HSE’s international colleagues, students, and the general public are invited to attend a lecture by Charles King, Professor of International Affairs and Government at Washington, D.C.’s Georgetown University. Professor King will speak about the relationship between academic research, national security, and the need for intellectual freedom, drawing especially on the experience of developing the social sciences in the United States and the place of free inquiry in building world-class academic training. The lecture ‘Academic Research, Policy Relevance, and Intellectual Freedom’ will start at 3:00 pm. Anyone interested is welcome to attend.
