Yaroslav Kuzminov Confirmed as HSE Rector for the Next 5 Years
On May 28, 2014 Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev signed off the papers confirming that Yaroslav Kuzminov will remain in his role as Rector of the HSE for the next five years.
Yaroslav Kuzminov has been the HSE’s Rector since it was founded in 1992. Over the years he has been re-elected to the post several times by university conference and his current five year appointment expires this month. Recently however the power to confirm the position of Rector was transferred to the Russian government in its capacity as founder of the university. That was one of the pre-conditions for the university to enter the ‘5/100’ competition on improving international rankings.
At an HSE conference of research and teaching staff in March, Deputy Prime Minister Olga Golodets declared that the government had no other candidates for the job. At that conference, Yaroslav Kuzminov gave an in-depth lecture about the interim results of the HSE’s development programme and plans for the university in the near future. Rector Kuzminov said that the reputation of the academic staff is the best guarantee of the university’s autonomy.

HSE to Open Department of Geography and Geoinformatics Technology
The department is being created in collaboration with the Institute of Geography at the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) and will focus on problems of geoinformatics, climate change and socio-economic development. The department’s first educational programme in geography at HSE may open in 2020.
