Course Syllabus

Abstract

Course Strategic Management is designed for undergraduate students of the Educational Programme 07.03.04 Urban Planning Bachelor's degree. The course provides the necessary knowledge and develops skills and competencies to deal with strategic management issues. It is divided into two parts: part one covers the fundamentals of management and evolution of management approaches and part two covers the key elements of strategic management. The course deals with effective and efficient management of the organisation no matter what the size, type or regional affiliation of the organisation, as well as developing strategies for business development, successful competition, attracting and satisfying their customers. The study of core methods of external and internal environment’ analysis, approaches of strategizing will allow students to develop strategic management skills with short and long term vision of sustainable development in highly turbulent business environment. The course focuses on the role of competitive advantage, types of corporate and competitive strategies, and the main stages of the strategic management process: from defining the current mission, goals and strategies of an organisation to evaluating the results of strategy implementation.

  • 1. The aim of the course is to provide students with the necessary scope of theoretical knowledge, practical skills and competencies required for strategic management of organisations;
  • 2. Formation of students' knowledge system on strategic management processes;
  • 3. Explore the key methods of analyzing the external and internal environment;
  • 4. Formation of students' skills and competencies to develop company strategy, taking into account the main opportunities of the organisation and challenges of the business environment.

  • awareness of the core strategic management process and its key stages;
  • know the key methods of strategic analysis of the external environment and positioning of the firm, and be able to apply the tools in practice. Understanding of influence of factors of macro environment on the organisations of various kinds of economic activity;
  • explain the main methods for analysing the internal environment, and identify areas of competitive advantage of the firm. The ability to identify the tangible and intangible resources of the company, identify the core and fundamental competencies of the firm;
  • explain the different types of strategies and the strategic management tools for developing organisational strategy. Understand the differences between the concepts of strategic capability and competitive advantage and their role in building organisational competitiveness.
