The 4th international school for young scientists

Active and passive methods of the brain research

November 2-5th, 2017, Moscow, Russia

Payment form

School focuses on issues such as how the human brain recognizes a specific environmental stimuli and how it reacts to them, which areas of the brain are involved in the solution of this problem.

We invite undergraduates, graduate students and young researchers to participate in the school, jointly developed by the HSE, MGPPU, Moscow State University, St. Petersburg State University and Research Center "Kurchatov Institute". Invited lecturers from: University of Nizhny Novgorod, Aalto University (Finland), University College of London, UK, Saint-Petersburg University. Key lectures and workshops will be held at HSE (Laboratory of transcranial magnetic stimulation, EEG Laboratory and Behavior Laboratory) .

Modern technologies allow to significantly expand our understanding of how the brain works. Many important discoveries have been made in the field of functional and morpho-physiological brain mapping. Technologies such as TMS, MEG, fMRI can effectively evaluate the role of the various structures of the brain in specific problems, as well as gain an understanding of the complex work of the whole brain. The school participants have a unique opportunity to get the experience with these techniques, learn about their capabilities and shortcomings, and discuss them. The main attention of the school is paid to the discussion on how to properly analyze the data obtained with these techniques, how to evaluate and interpret it. The school involves teachers and instructors from Russia, the United States and Europe.

The school will be held entirely in English.

The program includes the following topics:

Day 1: «TMS and TDCS tools of active decoding of the human brain activity»

Day 2: «Brain Mapping using MRI»

Day 3: «Neuromodelling and brain-computer intrerfaces»

Day 4: «EEG and MEG for the brain mapping»

Format: The school involves a 4-day 6-hour format. In addition to lectures on each topic, the program includes practical sessions and roundtables. The next technologies will be demonstrated for participants: TMS, TES, EEG, fMRI, eye tracking.

Application and selection procedure: Students will be selected on a competitive basis. Applicants should have a basic knowledge of neuroscience and good commands in English. The application package includes CV and a personal statement. In the latter, applicants should specify: (i) their experience with neuroimaging tools, (ii) how they will apply neuroimaging methods in their current projects, (iii) their long-term goals in learning more about neuroimaging methods.

Participation fee: 1000 rubles (payment form will become available on October 10th).
HSE students can participate in the school for free, if they contact organizers and arrange this in advance.
