Course Syllabus
Abstract
The course develops foreign language communicative competence at the B1 level (according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, CEFR), specifically linguistic, sociolinguistic, sociocultural, discursive, strategic competences, as well as the development of academic skills necessary for using the English language in academic, scientific, and professional activities. The discipline is taught during the third and fourth modules of the first year and follows a modular structure. Each thematic module has a similar structure based on discussion topics that correspond to language proficiency levels, integrate knowledge from various humanities, natural sciences, and economics disciplines, expand information and language resources considering possible contexts of professional activities and communication spheres among professionals with higher education. The modules aim to develop specific macro and micro skills in both oral and written speech, in terms of reception and production. They provide the opportunity to work with different types and forms of texts simultaneously, such as linear/non-linear, verbal/non-verbal, media, artistic, etc. They also involve a sufficient amount of independent research work and allow for variation in the course workload based on the actual learning situation.
