Course Syllabus
Abstract
This advanced level Vietnamese language course (Advanced Course) is designed for non-native learners of Vietnamese who have taken approximately three years of regularly paced college-level Vietnamese. It aims to acquire and improve skills in the main types of translation, considering the specifics of intercultural communication. The overall goal of this course is to bring students’ Vietnamese proficiency to an advanced level and help them develop an active command of authentic reading materials. At the end of the course students will achieve C1 level according to the CEFR.
Learning Objectives
- To improve basic direct and reverse translation techniques, considering the specifics of intercultural and inter language communication;
- To improve and systematize Vietnamese language skills by means of comparing the systems of the original language and the language of written translation;
- To develop skills and proficiency in the main types of translation;
- To enhance knowledge in linguistic and regional studies on the basis of topical issues of our times;
Expected Learning Outcomes
- Students have the ability to select and apply adequate translation strategies in accordance with the type of translation. Students are able to use the basic translation models and translation transformations when analyzing the translation process and its results.
- Students can adequately uses stable phrases, idioms within the studied topics;
- Students can recognize speech levels: official, unofficial, neutral, etc. Students are able to recognize linguistic markers of social relations and use them (greeting, farewell, emotional exclamation, etc.)
- Students have listening skills of authentic foreign language speech within the studied topics, transmitted by various channels (from a live voice to audio and video recordings); know how to choose and adequately use the word depending on the context within the studied topics
- Students are able to determine the intentionality of the translated text; to define keywords and basic units of thesauruses.
