Course Syllabus

Abstract

The course is designed for students who are training for the following majors: linguistics, cultural studies, translation and interpreting, teaching methods. This course is aimed at providing guidance in preparation and delivery of speeches within frames of public context. It focuses on the realization of a number of tasks, such as: gaining the basic rhetoric expertise, mastering presentations, speaking on special occasions and preparing a workshop. On completion, students are supposed to be able to prepare and deliver well-organized speeches with appropriate audiovisual support, also demonstrate speaking, listening, and interpersonal skills necessary to become effective communicators in academic context or the workplace.

  • The main aims of the course are: • to explore the basics of rhetoric knowledge; • to study the principles and methods of selected forms of public speaking for various purposes, contexts and audiences; • to consider different presentation techniques, to plan and structure presentations; •to apply knowledge to classroom presentations and receive feedback on the style and impact in presenting; • to overcome anxiety, fear and nervousness when making a presentation .

  • Students will be able to plan, structure and deliver a workshop
  • Students will be able to use language in public speaking effectively and to make the speech clear, accurate, and bright
  • Students will be able to use the methods of persuasion, to identify logical fallacies and to deliver a persuasive speech
  • Students will be able to use their voice effectively; to vary vocal characteristics during the speech and to make it more appealing to the audience
  • Students will learn : - how to structure the speech; - how to begin and end the speech effectively; - learn about unconventional ways to structure the speech
  • Students will learn about different methods of speech delivery and their peculiarities
  • Students will learn about different types of informative speech and will present their own informative speech
  • Students will learn about the effective usage of body language (eye contact, gestures, posture, movements) and some recommendations for the speaker's appearance and style
  • Students will learn some strategies and techniques which can be used while dealing with difficult audience
  • Students will learn the main requirements and guidelines for giving a speech on special occasions
  • Students will: - get acquainted with main types of public speeches and their characteristics; - create an image of a successful speaker and their skills; - learn strategies for dealing with stage fright; - learn about the structure of an elevator pitch; - plan and present an introductory speech
  • Students will:- learn about the importance of audience analysis; - learn about the main components of demographic and situational audience analysis; - learn how to gather information about the audience and use it in their speeches
