Abstract

The course designed to engage you with the use of new media in the global political arena by governments and international organizations, but also our focus is on NGOs, activists, social movements and dissidents attempting to recruit, organise and fund their operations through the use of ICTs. The course looks at the theories, the different approaches to politics and ethics of algorithmic governance and digital political cultures, sociopolitical movements and activism, specifically in reference to the anti-globalization/global justice movement, various dissident movements against authoritarian and totalitarian governments around the world, for example the uprisings during the so called Arab Spring and organizations calling for transparency, justice and equality in government, such as WikiLeaks, Occupy, and anti-austerity movements.
