Course Syllabus
Abstract
This course will explore world literature from the early 20th century to the present with a
focus on the fantastic as a response to the upheavals and instability of modernity. We use the
fantastic as a space for exploring our lived reality. It helps us to figure out who we are, but our
fantastic texts also reveal what our society values and what we fear. Texts—including short
stories, poetry, novels, fine art, and films—will feature the voices and experiences of
marginalized groups. Analysis and discussion in the classroom will focus on issues of society,
culture, and social justice
