Course Syllabus

Abstract

This course covers the core issues that urban economics and spatial economics study. The course is based on both current research in this field of science, published in the world's leading scientific journals, and already traditional concepts that are important for a general understanding of the discipline.
Learning Objectives

Learning Objectives

  • The purpose of the course is to introduce students to the fundamentals of such disciplines as spatial economics and urban economics. Students will need to be familiar with current research in these areas. Upon successful completion of the course, students will gain an understanding of why cities were formed, why companies need to gather in agglomerations, how city systems function, and what factors influence their location.

  • to master the concepts of cities, agglomerations, how they are related to the specialization of economic activity and innovative activity
  • to master the concepts of economies of scale in the context of cities, agglomeration economies and to study the different stages of development of firms and their corresponding environmental conditions for maximum productivity
  • study the main types of public goods that attract people and firms to cities and the forces that prevent the endless growth of cities
  • become familiar with concepts such as physical and commercial geography in the context of urban economics, how climate affects the functioning of cities and migration
  • become familiar with concepts such as Zipf's Law, study the metrics used to estimate population concentration in cities

    Презентация опубликованной научной статьи на тему семинара. Каждый студент получит по одной статье, которую нужно будет представить коллегам и объяснить основные идеи, изложенные в ней. Успешной презентацией будет считаться выступление, полноценно описывающее основные идеи, изложенные в заданой статье. Пропуск или неполное описание важных частей статьи, приведет к потере баллов. Оценивание будет проводиться по 10-балльной шкале. В случае неуспешной сдачи данного элемента контроля, студентам будет предоставлена возможность сделать новую презентацию этой или другой статьи.
