Abstract

Advanced Topics in Global Security Studies This course analyses key contemporary global security issues. The course outlines different theoretical approaches to the study of global security and introduces students to core concepts in security studies. A central focus is how these approaches are applied to issues such as the rise of multi-polar world and the possible consequences of these power transitions. The relationships between geopolitics, global economy, and environment are explored against the background of regional and global security challenges. The course addresses the architecture of global security governance, including alliances, international organisations, international regimes, and international law. In particular, students will examine how various international actors seek to regulate global security issues, such as WMDs, international and regional conflicts, and terrorism. The course also looks into new global security challenges, including the revolution in military affairs and the transformation of war, the privatisation of security, the rise of human and drug trafficking, and non-traditional security challenges, such as environmental security and depleting natural resources
